How do you want to be dealt with when you pass on?

I want to donate as much as possible of my body to science and organ donations as possible. I have an extremely rare genetic condition (nothing serious), it only affects 1 in 2,500 or 3,000, therefore some of my parts, particularly my brain will be of keen interest to researchers in this field. However, I have hear from numerous sources that in hospitals and colleges, when dealing with the deceased as part of medical research, the bodies are treated with the utmost of disrespect and the body is not returned to family, but cremated afterwards, which changed my mind drastically about donating so to science. I do however want to donate as many functioning organs as possible to those who need them. I want to be buried afterwards.

tl;dr: How do you want to be dealt with when you pass on?

I want to donate my organs and be buried after.

the body is not returned to family, but cremated afterwards, which changed my mind drastically about donating so to science.

The institution will pay for the body to be cremated and the ashes returned to the family or the family can make their own arrangements for burial/cremation at their own expense. That's how UCD's medical faculty does it anyway.

How reliable are these sources, firstly? All types of sources come out with things that... lack substantiation. Secondly, for my part, when I'm dead, I'll be less inclined to take respect or disrespect seriously.

I've made it clear to my family that I'd like any organs that are of any use to be donated and then I want to be cremated in the cheapest coffin possible, cardboard preferably.

I want to be blown up on the beach by Gormanstown firing range and left for the Fulmars that live up in the cliff there.
I'm not suitable for organ donation anyway.

Whack me into a skip out the back, when I'm gone, I'm gone.
If a few happy tunes could be played then that would be all the better. It would be over for me, let the rest have a good time. What else could you want?

Yeah, regardless of whether you want to be an organ donor or not, (why the hell not ffs), I mourn the lack of options other than burial or cremation.
I'd be happy for them to get anything viable off my body once I have no need for it anymore.
    Not the face though. :pac:
After that, I don't care what they do with the rest. Send it to Findus for all I care.

OP did remind me though to sort out my organ donor card, I've been wanting to do that for ages, kept forgetting. Must check it out, I think you have to notify your parents or next of kin of your decision to be an organ donor?
Something like that anyway, will check it out.
An opt out system would be infinitely preferable.

As along as i don't end up like communist leader guy that died like 50 Years ago and has so much preservative on him it's like he died yesterday. And is in a glass case for everyone to admire.

    Anything but that

I'd donate anything of use, bar my eyes and my skin. The thought of someone else having my eyes creeps me out. Yes, yes, I'd be dead and none the wiser, but still.

Afterwards, I'm not sure. I think my family would like to be able to bury me, as a place to mourn. But I think something like this would be lovely http://www.treehugger.com/sustainable-product-design/poetree-a-funeral-urn-that-lets-you-plant-a-tree-from-ashes.html

I should probably discuss this with my family... My partner knows but he's not an official NOK.

I plan to donate my body to science fiction. It could inspire some new alien races. Failing that, let the medical students at university have a rummage around inside. No-one will want my organs after I'm through with them, and the poor kids could use a good laugh ..!

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

My best friend died a few years ago, and I was there in the hospital when she died, at her bedside, and I can tell you that after she passed away it wasn't long before I realised that her body was just a shell. Something leaves it when life leaves it and it really is just a shell that houses I don't know what, the spirit, life force, whatever you might call it. Her. Her light went out.
I'm not religious or anything, but it just feels like what's left in that hospital bed has nothing to do with who inhabited it. Your eyes are just lenses really, and someone else's lifeforce would make them different, they wouldn't be your eyes.

I'm the opposite, purely because the only viable part left in me will probably be my eyes!!
40 Fags a day and a love of dodgy grub should put paid to the rest of me :-)

I do want to buried though, purely so I can turn to some of the former health fanatics in the cemetery and ask them what the flock they're doing there :D

No point in dying healthy IMO.

Ah, it depends on your genes really, some people smoke and drink and do everything in excess for years and are none the worse for it, others get cancer from looking at a steakhouse menu. You're probably one of the lucky bastards. :P That's not to say you shouldn't look after yourself but people can also worry themselves into an early grave.

Well I want ACDC's "Highway to hell" played at my funeral (my family don't particularly like this idea but I've assured them I'll haunt them if they leave it out of the ceremony) and I want anything of use donated, then my body cremated with the ashes mixed with cement into some kind of structure and thrown into the sea to form a small reef for sea life

I agree - ideally I'd be buried in an above-ground mausoleum so I have an easy escape if it turns out I'm not actually dead but just in a extraordinarily deep sleep. :P

That Alfred Hitchcock story about the guy who gets buried alive has had a lasting impression on me :(

I wish to be embalmed, then when the Rose of Tralee parade is going thru town, to be sat between the incumbent Rose & Daithí O Sé in the open top car. At the end of the journey they can lash a few dozen fireworks to my body & launch me into the night sky, spreading chunks of me over the town (and people) I love :)

    Burial - Organs to donation
I'd like to donate organs if possible, and have a organ donor card but the chances of dying in such a way that the organs would be viable, and of use to someone else, is slim.

Wouldn't feel comfortable giving my body or any part to science though, don't know why.

Other than that, I'd like to be buried.
