extra power plug for CPU

I recently bought a motherboard, MSI MS-7380, to build a C2Q Q6600 system. The board has an 8-pin extra power plug for CPU, but my PSU only has a 4-pin plug, which fits one half of the 8-pin socket. The PSU successfully runs a Q6600 on another mobo.
Currently the MSI board won't boot, but it may be a RAM issue. I have some RAM on the way which definitely suits the MSI board, but I was trying it with the RAM from the board that does work.

If I get an adapter like this one:
    http://www.ebay.ie/itm/8pin-EPS-M-to-4pin-ATX-P4-F-15cm-power-cable-for-additional-power-for-MB-CPU-/160929586778?pt=UK_Computing_CablesConnectors_RL&hash=item2578269e5a

and splice it into a couple of molex connectors, should I be good to go?

Or should I look for another PSU with an 8-pin plug? (Suggestions welcome !)

I don't recognise the 4-pin connector on the other end of the adapter above.

    Thanks

edit: the female plug on the adapter seems like the normal 4 pin supply, I just didn't recognise the EPS name. I'm hoping the adapter on its own will suit. Some pics I've seen of the MSI mobo had a flap covering half of the 8-pin socket.

You should be able to get a 4 pin molex to 8 pin

The 4 pin adaptor should be easily good enough to power that cpu. It powers i7 cpu's so I cant see why it wouldnt give enough power to one of them. Tbh I would be looking at other stuff as to whats causing your issues.

    OK, update on this.
I got the 4-to-8 pin adapter, I got the correct ram (works in another PC), changed the CMOS battery, cleared the CMOS, tried a PCI graphics card in both slots, tried with and without HDD. Also tried PCIe gfx card.

A LED on the board comes on, and a blue one also when powered on. CPU fan runs, CDROM light flashes, monitor light comes on green for about 3 secs then goes orange. Nothing at all displayed on monitor.
    No beeps from speaker.

Anything else I can try before I tell the ebay seller its dead?
