How soon after paying vrt can I nct the car?

So I'm paying the vrt in the morning so I'm wondering can I book it in for nct as soon as I get my southern plates ?? do I have to wait for log book to arrive or will the invoice from the vrt centre with vin number and vehicle details etc be enough for the mechanics to inspect it?!. Thanks!
