Anyone been to Myrtle beach?

I am planning a trip to the US next year for a few weeks. I am visiting New York and Chicago, but I also want to visit a Southern State and have a beach holiday, simultaneously . I was looking at Myrtle beach in South Carolina. I know that is a popular holiday destination among midwestern Americans but I am wondering if anybody here has ever visited the resort? I know Florida is an option but I don't find it authentically Southern and I've been there anyway. Is Myrtle beach a tacky kip akin to Santa Ponsa, Torremolinos etc, or is it completely different to the typical Spanish resorts? Would a non American enjoy Myrtle beach? Thanks

    I was there twice.

It's a sprawling resort, with a lot of neon signs, and decent golf and nightlife. It was still good fun though.

If I was in your boots OP I'd go a small bit further south - maybe Charleston S.C. or Savannah Georgia areas?
