Meade made an interesting point at the Cafe en Seine preview last night that soft at Cheltenham translates to 'tacky' for him due to the use of covers (that they will be using in anticipation of the frost). What I gleaned from that is that stamina and an engine to keep going is key if it shows up like that; Zarkandar in the Champion Hurdle is one that springs to mind.

The going wll always be good to soft, as it is at start of festival every year. Perhaps it may be a little tackier than usual this year, but rest assured it will be described as no worse than good to soft, soft in places.

What it is described as is irrelevant, it is the actual state of the ground that the OP is referring too, Simon Claisee can claim whatever he chooses or whatever he's bosses tell him to declare, not sure which ot is at this stage.

If as looks likely the going on Day One is Soft then the obvious beneficaries for me are Champagne Fever and Hurricane Fly.

Claisse has already stated the ground will be soft on Day 1, not good to soft, if the rain comes as forecast.

Off the top of my head horses that will like softer ground on the opening day: Champagne Fever, Melodic Rendezvous, Jezki, Zarkandar, Hurricane Fly (imo)

Of those I think it will suit Champagne Fever the best

Should suit Un Atout as well.

They are currently showing it as soft all over. Guess the worry now is whether they get more rain and then get the freezing temperatures forecast as this will stop the course drying out at all surely. The going stick reading given was 5.7 with the cross country at 5.1 . These readings were for 3 O' Clock Friday.

James Pyman was saying in the Racing Post that the Supreme Novices will be a good judge of whether it's soft or not.

If they don't break the 4 minute barrier, then it's soft. Regardless of what the clerk says.

Regardless of the weather, the going will always be on the easy side on day one of the Festival because they'll make it that way, even if it's been dry on the lead up. Not much good if you've got a fast ground hurdler who's Champion Hurdle class.

Current forecast is that it will be soft on all four days of the Festval so I would expect it to be very soft on Tuesday
