    Hi all

I know there's a few of you on here who have done this course at UCC in the past- as part of the application you have to sit an assessment to see if you have an aptitude for legal study. Just wondering if anyone could offer some advice on what exactly the assessment entails as there's v little info on it?? Thanks!:)

Off hand, it was a general writing test. How well you can compose an essay on a vaguely legal subject, and in general I think nearly everyone passed it.
On the course, finding it excellent and well worth doing.

Talk to any of the people giving the course, they will tell you the evening students run rigs around the day students. (No offence to day students) I did the evening course in UCC and really loved every bit of it. It's not as daunting as you think and is a great social outlet. Also try and get involved in clubs and societies just because you are evening does not mean you can't debate or row or get involved in the huge number of activities. For lawyers debating workshops are great. Also call to students union they are very helpfull and can point you in right direction.

Fwiw I asked today and was told everything was still going ahead. I would imagine they would have mentioned it by now. Is the closing date the 11th?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 233 ✭✭jewels652

Thanks for letting us know BanzaiBK.. That's great news, I couldn't afford to do it anywhere else either and it just suits me perfectly. Yes the closing date is on the 11 you have to send your application form to the admissions office not the adult continuing education office I nearly made that mistake...
Good Luck and I hope you all get it....

AFAIK, based on asking a class rep, the course is going ahead - with the usual cavaet on sufficient numbers. The staff do mention they enjoy teaching the EBCL and are supportive - so best of luck with your applications.

so they havent got the numbers after all - according to the website they have extended the deadline for applications by a week

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20 Rebelette288

they have also extended the application date in previous years and the course has subsequently gone ahead so hopefully this year will be no different

I went to ucc yesterday to give them my application form and I ask the girl in charge how many applicants was there so far and she said 15 and they need 30 but she said not to worry because is usually like that every year, she said everybody applies at the last minute so I am not worrying.

Enjoy tomorrow - everyone will be in the same both as yourself. UCC have a grand support staff and points of contact to interact with the EBCL.

Hello, I'm thinking of studying this course this year and just wondering how you all got on and if you could give me an indication of how much time (outside of the classroom) you had to dedicate to study. I work full time as a legal secretary and have two kids, not that young and think I'll manage but it would be good to get an indication of how much time you spent at study outside lecture hours, and if you felt the course was worth completing. Thanks in advance.

Hi Cluelesjewel, I cant believe that it was four years ago, when I was here inquiring about the EBCL. Well I decided to do it that time, and today it was my very last lecture :) it makes me so emotional in a way.
Anyway, going back to your question, the course does require dedication and studying outside hours but it is manageable. You are required to do essays, exams, prepare for tutorials and obviously attend class.
In my class there were people working full time, with kids and with such busy lives and they managed to go all the ways with good grades and all, so what I am saying is, that it is doable.

I am not going to lie to you, the last four years were a roller coaster, and there were many times when I felt like giving up. Especially when doing essays and exams, the first year was so daunting. It takes a while to get used to the legal jargon and college life. But it gets easier, after you overcome all of that, you can start enjoying your studies.

About UCC and the law department, I personally found them to be a great support network, there are many people that would disagree.
I needed help the first two years as I could not attend lectures and they were great and as long I was able to sit the exams and submit my essays everything was ok. My point is, that if you need help or guidance reach out to them and they will accommodate you. Some lecturers are very nice and others are just okish, some will try and explain things to help students understand and others just go through the material because they have to.

Was it worth completing the degree? Absolutely, it was the best decision I have made in my life.
I hope this answer your question. :)

Wow! Fabulous to hear from someone who started 4 years ago and just finished.

Just wondering if anyone has any idea when applicants are likely to hear if they are successful or not?

    Many thanks

Hi I'm waiting to hear too. They said at assessment early may. The deadline was extended to last Friday for applications and their assessments are this week so I'm hoping sometime next week.
