I think they can be nice but try and avoid one with very prominent logo. If possible. Big logos are naf

Not buying one because you think they are 'too common' says more about you than the people that wear them.

Anyway, they are well made and they do last. Have gotten laughably overpriced since they became popular though, they have an official store on eBay which there is usually good discounts on.

Em not really, he didn't ask if they were too common, he asked if they're chavvy. Besides, would you say the same to someone 8 or so years ago if they were asking if burberry print tracksuit with matching baseball caps were chavvy?

I don't think superdry is in the same league as that, though, but there's no reason to by nasty to someone just for asking like.

FWIW OP, I think they're lovely and really well made. Some of the logos can be in your face but there are plenty that are a bit more subtle and nice.

as i said in the original post i do think they are nice looking jackets. maybe there is something nice about wearing a good looking jacket that a the percentage of your peers don't have.

    Made from sheep.... maybe.

Work by sheep? Not likely. That's just silly. Sheep don't wear clothes!

I don't think they are chavvy. I think they are quite nice, but I would go for one with a small logo . I think they are on the back shoulder.

If you're worried about it, don't buy one.
Plenty of other styles/brands out there.

Probably chavy by association rather than chavy because they look that way. I just wouldn't like wearing something that so many other people are wearing. It just gives the impression that you're a brain dead moron. i know not everybody who wears them are like that but that sort of sheep mentality probably exists in quite a lot of wearers. With internet shopping and large and independent retailers galore there's more choice than ever, so the excuse that's it's a nice fitting coat is nonsense. But everybody is free do do what they want.

So yeah, not a big fan.

I've a few of them, one leather and two windcheater types and I love them. I don't think they are chavvy at all..quite the opposite actually!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,925 ✭✭✭✭anncoates

They just look like generic hiking/rain-type jackets, at least the wind cheater ones that seem to be everywhere.

If the logo bothers you, there's loads of jackets around in that style.

It's a fucking jacket, not a philosophy of life.

Excuse? Why would someone excuse an item of clothing they wear? They're clothes, don't take it them so seriously!

There's a difference between someone being a bit common and being an all out antisocial scumbag, imho.

I got one in about 2008 I think it was, before they were available here (I got it in the north). But then I noticed that loads and loads of guys were wearing them so I sort of went off mine.

And this is going to sound ridiculous...but I've never seen anyone "cool" wearing one... its always been bootcut-jeans type guys. I consider myself fashionable and wouldn't want to be considered the same as those guys!! :-)

Now I expect to be pillored for that comment!!

But seriously, each to their own. If you like it and it looks good on you and it makes you feel good about yourself, wear it.

    Oi !! You there !!

I can understand anyone with a Superdry angst, but take back that boot-cut comment !!!!

I... can't... I really dislike bootcut jeans.. especially when worn with shoes, and when the back part is all tattered from trailing on the ground...

Believe me I used to be a bootcutter, in fact I used to wear massive jeans back in the 90s. Bigger the better. But now, there's no excuse for it, when you can get a really nice pair of straight / relaxed fit jeans that don't have the wide ends.

I couldnt pull off straight legged jeans.
My arse is too big, my shoes size is too big and my mickey would suffocate!

Mate, I have size 12 feet... can't get any bigger than that (well you can, but... you know).

I've big legs / thighs too... I'm not talking skinny, I'm just talking "normal" jeans that don't flare out... they don't have to be bootcut.

Diesel do good ones, Larkee is what they are called. Great fit, nice and loose on the leg.

Anyway, back to Superdry!! Eh, the hoodies are awful!! Etc.

    Straight leg ≠ Skinny jeans

Although I find a lot of straight leg jeans are in general, a little more fitted than regular jeans.

Edit: As for Superdry, they have become quite ubiquitous, though that wouldn't stop me purchasing them if I was interested.

I'd only ever consider them as the most casual of jackets though, so perhaps that is how some might associate them with chavvyness?
Additionally if you go down the route of associating brands as chavvy if some people fitting that description wear them, then I'd also consider Tommy Hilfiger, Ted Baker, Ralph Lauren Poloshirts and a host of other brands chavvy despite them generally being considered 'good quality' by a lot of people.

So wear if you it makes you feel good but be prepared to be looked down upon from a great distance by fashionable people like Prettyblack here.

My initial post was probably a bit harsh but I do get kind of irritated by people who don't have their own minds. As I said, not everybody who wears popular brands of clothing is like this, but many people are. When I see the logos on the back of those coats I just think it seems like the people are robots who have been stamped with that logo. Above all else I just wouldn't want to wear something that I can see lots of other people wearing - I think that's very off putting.

It's the sort of mentality that a lot of impressionable school kids have and as an adult I'd want to steer clear of it. If you're someone who doesn't give a damn about what other people think and you genuinely just like the coats with the common logo then I'd say fair play as that's a good quality to have. But considering the massive amount of choice we have at our disposal I think it's kind of sad that so many people are choosing identical coats.

Just to add: if I were to describe a chav, one of the first characteristics I'd mention is their choice of clothing. Nearly all of those types seem to be drawn to certain types of clothing, almost as though it's like some sort of badge of honour. It's unfortunate that other non chavs sometimes get lumped together with the real ones because of their clothing though. Those tight black and white striped trousers some girls wear for example: I have never seen a non chav wear those but I'm sure some normal girls do. But you know that when something gets a bad reputation some people are going to avoid it like the plague, not just middle class people either!

Why? If you like something, you like it. Why would other people also liking it make you not like it? Prettyblack liked the jacket enough to buy it in the first place, but on discovering other people also liked it, decided he/she did not like it. I think that is a little bit sad really. I kind of think that your attitude of not liking something just because it is popular is no different from liking something just because it is popular.

I'm not having digs at you, but I just think that if you like something, you should be able to like it regardless of whether it is popular are not. Some of the attitudes strike me as being no different from liking a band until they become popular and then not liking them for no reason other than they are popular.

Fyi, I don't have any superdry stuff as I don't really like their style and think they are overpriced for what they are. Are they chavvy? Hate that word but considering the fact they seem to be the clothes to wear which are not hollister/A&F by rich kids, no they are not. Are the common? By that I took it as meaning popular and yes they are, they are everywhere, worn by all types of people. If you like the jackets, get one. If not don't. But do what you want, and not be a sheep and do what you think you should do.

Well you see that's the thing - I still more or less like the jacket, but people wear clothes probably for two reasons: 1) to not be naked and 2) to express their personality and sense of style. When you have every Thomas, Richard and Harold expressing the same personality as you, you tend to feel a little put off by that. :) Those of us who feel that way about clothes, that is.

I still like the jacket. I have one. I rarely if ever wear it anymore.

    One-upmanship
Wouldn't be seen dead in one but that's more due to the way I'd dress. They also have a strong following with the country folk.
Just as a matter of interest with out looking it up do you actually know where superdry is made..

For those who don't its England.

I think it really depends on how you wear it. Someone can wear superdry with jeans or whatever and it can be seen as nice but if you wear with Ecko tracksuit bottoms it could be seen as chavy.

Something I'd like to ask is what designer brands are seen as chavy and what are seen as respectable?

Like I'd wear people call Fred Perry or Ralph Lauren chavy but surely it depends on how you wear it.
