Nigel McGuinness DVD Screening

    Hi all,

At the end of May/start of June, Nigel McGuinness is doing a tour of the UK, holding screenings of his new DVD, "The Last of McGuinness", followed by Q&A sessions and meet and greets.

It got me thinking; wouldn't it be great if we got Nigel over to Dublin to do a screening! So I contacted Nigel (through his FB account) about the possibility of a Dublin screening and he said he would love to come to Dublin but that I would need to contact the person booking the tour. I have since e-mailed the booker and am waiting for a reply.

Hopefully I will get a reply soon enough but before then I want to just gauge the general interest of people in attending such an event and hear any suggestions you might have. This is my first time looking into something like this so any and all help would be greatly appreciated!

The main things I'd like to gauge straight away are:
    1) General interest in the event
    2) Potential venues that would be open to/suitable for such an event
    3) Would similar Q & A sessions in the future be something you would be interested in seeing more of?

As I said, any and all feedback would be greatly appreciated!

    Regards

    Norman

I'd definitely go to it,would have to be in a small enough venue as I can't see there being that much interest over here.

    I'd love to go!

    Cheers for the replies!

Oh, it'll def have to be somewhere small. I really have no idea how many would potentially come but I am thinking that a crowd of 100-150 would be a pretty good turnout. Or do you think even that is ambitious?

Maybe somewhere like the Button Factory would suit or if I could get some sort of deal to show it in the IFI that could be interesting, appeal to film fans as well as wrestling fans as it's a documentary that can be appreciated by non wrestling fans also.

The first place that sprung to mind has the lighthouse, but I'd imagine that would be pretty ambitious. Others I can think of are Screen, The IFI.

You also have the Ivy House and The Bean Bags cinemas in The Factory on Barrow street (both great shouts) and The Hampton Hotel.

Only ever been to a screening in the Hampton. Bean bag sort of jobbie, probably wouldn't suit. Worth checking out though.

The Ivy House actually looks really cool but might be a bit far out.

I've gotten a reply from the booker and we're going to have a proper discussion on the idea next week. It would be great if a few more could chime in and say if they were interested or not, just as a means to let him know what kind of interest there is.

I think that it's a good idea but I wouldn't be able to go to that as I am barely able to make it through each week with enough money left over to buy a lucky bag. But it is worth organising. The Pint would be a good place if you could arrange your own projector and screen.

Received a mail from the booker and they seem keen on the idea! Now to get more of an estimate of interest from fans and venues.

Is there any other sources I should go to to gauge interest among fans in this event?

Twitter and anyone you know who's into wrestling really! I would have said this would have been your best bet, but not many people have put their hat in the ring for it!

As for a venue have you thought of the O'Reilly theatre where Mick Foley did his last Dublin show?

Put up a twitter account or Facebook group here and we can share it

Cheers for the feedback lads. Going to set up a Twitter & Facebook account tonight.

To be honest, I was expecting a bit more interest here on Boards but I suppose there isn't much solid info I can share with people yet. Will post the links asap.

Give it a few days, this place tends to go very quiet over the weekends :)

The other thing is that the people that would REALLY wanna see it would've ordered it and seen it by now. But i think the IFI would be a fantastic idea if it could be done. As TBC said, weekends are the 'time away from wrestling' part of the week. If it's still dead by wednesday then yeah, not much action. but hopefully not :)

True, those who wanted to see it will probably have by now but the draw is really the opportunity to meet Nigel and discuss the screening and his career with him.

Ya, I really like the idea of the IFI screening. It's a great spot and is very professional as well. With their backing as well it might help promote it to non wrestling fans.

Fingers crossed this can go somewhere anyway!

June 4th. Gives plenty of time to make a plan of it. Will hopefully go and bring a few friends.

I know with these things it's hard to pick and choose but having thought about it, if you ya got the IFI it would be class.

Just a quick update on this; since launching the Facebook page we have 32 people confirm their interest which is a fantastic start. Thanks to all who have confirmed their interest!

Having had a look at some venues, I personally feel the Lighthouse might be most suitable. One of their screens accommodates 68 people which is a very realistic number and, if demand were to increase, another of their screens hold 115 so we could aim for that.

However, we have only made initial contact with the Lighthouse cinema and are awaiting a reply.

Keep on spreading the event to your friends! :)

Have only really seen his matches with Bryan,Angle and a few others but from reading reviews of the film and from listening to him on Cabana's podcast I'd head to this for sure.

Can't find a link now but his match vs. Naomichi Marufuji at Glory by Honor V is well worth tracking down too.

Aye, when everyone was raving about KENTA vs Danielson, I thought this match kicked its ass

Every match with Marufuji is incredible.

Sorry, nothing new to report on this. Nigel's booker is quite slow at getting back to me and I was travelling for the weekend so hadn't a chance to do much. Will provide updates as I get them.

Great to hear you are still up for this! :)

This probbaly needs the backing of Wrestlezone if it is to be a success. As afterall, Wrestlezone was Irelands greatest ever wrestling success. Cheap too :D

I'm sure with so much involvement you've checked all venues. Thought I suggest The Sugar Club on Leeson Street as a possible place to screen.

Been to a few comedy gigs there but going by flyers and posters I've seen around the city, they seem to be screening more and more movies. Great spot not too sure of the capacity.

    Hi everyone,

Just offering an update on this, which to be honest is much the same. I've been e-mailing Nigel's booker about what I need from his side in order to get venues on board but he just isn't replying to me.

we have a number of interested venues but don't really want to name them until we have a very concrete agreement.

Apologies to all who have shown interest in this due to the slowness of the planning and updating, this is my first attempt at something like this and thought it would be alot easier to do to be honest!

At the moment I can't confirm if this will go ahead or not but will try my hardest to make it happen. I can assure you that no tickets will be put on sale until we have everything set in stone so this won't be a Wrestlezone ireland type of affair where people will lose money. Tickets will only be sold if we have it 100% confirmed that the screening will go ahead.

Hopefully my next update will be more positive.

Have a great Easter everyone and hopefully the next update will be more positive! :)

    Hi all,

I am sorry to repor that this screening will not be happening (suprise suprise eh!).

I have constantly tried communicating with Nigel's booker for the tour of his DVD screenings and he refuses to get back to me, though I have sent him various updates re locations, costs, interest, etc.

I'm pretty dissapointed as I thought it would be a great chance to do something a little different for wrestling fans in this neck of the woods.

If anything happens in the mean time to change this, I will let you all know but that looks incredibly unlikely.

Thank you all for your interest and input in this and again I'm sorry to dissapoint you all.

Hopefully I'll be able to organize something in the future.

There is a screening still in Belfast at The Empire as far as I am aware.
