How long will Setanta have it or is it a year-on-year thing with them?

How bad is Setanta's coverage, if we consider RTE doing it a step in the right direction :pac:

The glory days of coverage were 09-11, I shall miss them dearly :(

Well RTÉ is in HD now, BBC are only broadcasting 10 races, and we have to pay for Setanta and Sky F1. I think it would be a good thing if it went back.

BTW, do Setanta broadcast all races live? If RTÉ got it back, could they broadcast all the races live?

I've accidentally do... watched Setantas version, they use BBC commentary don't they? They had nothing going on outside of the race but I don't mind that too much. Sports shows are going a bit over board these days. I wouldn't mind just watching the race and nothing else.

It's nice to have the build up on a Sunday when doing other stuff but I just can't really sit down and watch all that any more.

Very few RTE programs are in HD - I imagine that as soon as the Setanta rights expire Sky will snap up the Irish rights.

Setanta coverage is the BBC world feed.

Most sporting events are in HD though aren't they? Football etc.

Yep they use the world feed with BBC commentary tacked onto it. They also have lots of ad breaks, quite often at ridiculous times like during Q2 & then we have five mins of silent world feed in between Q2 & Q3. They have no build up, no interviews, no grid walk, no press conferences & sometimes the podium does barely be over & they just cut the feed & get on with playing decade old football matches. It's a really, really terrible way to watch F1 imo. I wouldn't expect much more of RTE doing it either.

With the way the Beeb is poised this year, Sky F1 is becoming more attractive all the time.

F1 on RTE, sponsored by Eircell ;)

They might pay for it if there was Irish interest in it a la Jordan and Irvine back in the good ol days. I always prefered ITVs coverage tbh. Collins' hard on for Heinze Harold Frentzen was a bit annoying

They managed to go for a break during the first pitstops of every race.

I used to love watcing the RTÉ coverage back in the day, that's probably what got me interested in the sport. BBC seemed to foreign :P

I agree with the above: 09-11 was the best coverage I think! I enjoyed ITVs coverage immensely too, but ad breaks during a live sporting event is a massive downside for me.

It was a real shame that sky had to come along and break up what was a really great team production/presenter/pundit team.

The current Setanta deal came into effect a couple of years ago, 2011 if I'm remembering it correctly, and at the time RTE was in serious competition for it and really wanted to have it back. Setanta offered more and Bernie accepted. When the Setanta deal expires, possibly the end of this year, I'm sure RTE will be putting their name in the hat again

That's kind of the second question I asked, when does the deal expire?

I'd like to see RTE getting the rights back, as I don't have Sky Sports or Setanta and BBC only show half the races live.

I wouldn't like to have to listen to Peter "Ever So Slightly" Collins again though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,262 ✭✭✭✭Autosport

I liked Peter Collins and i would like it if RTE ever got the rights again but i do think i'll stick with Sky, who else is offering a channel dedicated to F1 and yea i know alot of it is repeated but sometimes i like to watch older seasons and i like the racing legends interviews. They show all races live and you get to see Free Practice aswell, Love it :D

I watch F1 on the BBC and Setanta when the BBC aren't showing the race live. Setanta isn't too bad. Better than ITV who used to have ad breaks all over the coverage. At least you can watch the full race through without an ad break on Setanta (at least the European races).

RTE wouldn't be bad but I hated Peter Collins - he drove me nuts.

Funnily enough I watched the 2006 Hungarian Grand Prix last night and realised how bad ITVs coverage was. Thank god they don't cover it anymore. They had an interview with Bernie Ecclestone on it - some difference in the attitude that Bernie had towards Steve Ryder and the BBC. He loved Steve Ryder although Ryder was asking him easy questions.

Any time I've watched it, there's never once been a race that wasn't interrupted by ads

I think we have this conversation every year, pity RTE didn't get it back and BBC don't do full coverage

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 335 ✭✭ratedR

Couldn't see it happening. I think the main reason they picked it up was because not only did we have Irish interests; those Irish interests were actually winning and securing podiums pretty often. They also probably feel like they couldn't compete with Skys dedicated coverage. The hardcore fan will pay for sky and RTE would take in the casual fans or the ones who don't/can't/wont pay for sky, but without any Irish interest the numbers of casual fans/people not paying for sky probably wouldn't be enough.

It would be more in RTEs line to organise some proper rallying coverage or even try to get the rights to the WRC. Thousands in this country would watch that.

I'm half considering switching to Eircom for broadband so I can watch the races live. I don't know if it would be worth it though.

I actually liked RTE's F1 coverage. I'd rather listen to Peter Collins than David Croft. I'd also be happy enough with basic "lights-out to chequered-flag" coverage. The pre-race build-up and post-race analysis has become incredibly tedious and formulaic.

Sky have spent so much money on the rights, I'm sure they'd have the power to veto RTE ever getting more than a highlights package.

Thought Peter Collins was a dreadful and his annoying 'Mon-naco' and the 'great Wan pablo MON toia' - David Kennedy on the other hand was very good.

I think they have a deal with Setanta. It's part of the package that you get access to live soccer, rugby, F1 and UFC amongst others.

"Pedro Paulo Diniz" was another one. And of course, "Nicky Heidfeld". Still, for all his verbal idiosyncrasies, I'd rather listen to him than David Croft.

I dont remember a whole pile about rte coverage. Did they actually send them out to the races or were they sitting in Dublin watching the tv doing the commentary?
Did they actual have access to the drivers etc if they were out there?
I think I remember something about them only going to european races?
I think I used to just watch rte while the break was on utv.

They were at the races as far as I remember (most of them anyway). As they had a proper pre-race show with pre taped interviews and stuff.

rte had good coverage of f1 with peter collins and david kennedy. kennedy was very good imo and gave good insight into what was going on etc. as others have said, they did have a pre race part where they did interviews etc. i don't remember any breaks which was a big plus with rte , especially when itv took coverage of f1 in 1997

Ha, I'd forgotten about that one! In fairness the RTE coverage wasn't bad at all. I used to watch the buildup on ITV which was deadly but then the race on RTE. RTE generally had 1 ad break somewhere in the middle of the race, and usually at a time when there wasn't too much happening. ITV on the other hand was non stop ad breaks. I also thought Kennedy was incredibly annoying!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,338 ✭✭✭aphex™

I rarely watch sports in RTE. I usually switched to ITV for a more vivid colour and picture, only switching to RTE during the breaks. Perhaps this comment is one for the broadcasting forum but I've always noticed the difference over 20+ years and different tvs and even when moving from cable to sat.

You can get the sky HD pack for 5 a month, which includes F1. RTE show next to nothing in HD.

Full price 15 per month for hd and soon f1 only to be available via sky sports unless you are in before the packages change.

Is Sky F1 available on its own or must it be part of the Sports package? I rang recently trying to just get F1 but the guy said it wasn't possible... He didn't come across as very helpful though.

According to several posters here recently they got it for a fiver and the F1 channel was included.

the breaks on itv were a killer, i.e. in 1997 when they were on break when hill took the lead in hungary and in the nurburgring they went on a break around the time the 2 mclarens of DC and mika retired !!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,444 ✭✭✭frostie500

In fairness to ITV they did a very good job of avoiding missing the action and over the course of 11 years there's only a handful of examples of them making a mistake like that. They brought coverage of the sport on leaps and bounds when they took on the contract so Im not too critical. They had to have ad breaks, everyone agrees that they hate them, and they did a very good job of making sure we saw (almost) everything!

Maybe RTE should take a few races off Setanta then. Maybe a few that the BBC aren't showing.

RTE would totally fcuk it up.

"Now theres a car,and its a red car,and oh its being passed by a silver car...oh and theres a bit of argy bargy there by them 2 lads there. Its like Wickla town on a Sunday morning when all the auld biddys are leaving mass".

Best to leave it to Setanta.

It would be nice though if Setanta would stop with all the silly ad breaks during live qualifying and the race aswell......absolute head wrecker that is.

I dunno, Bernie seems set on taking F1 away from FTA altogether. I doubt RTÉ will get F1 back - it's a small market and it's already covered by subscription services from SKY and Setanta.

Really miss the BEEB 2009-2011 coverage :(

You don't even need a TV package with UPC to get Setanta. If you have Broadband & Phone, your still able to receive the basic channels from the UPC stream one of which is Setanta. I'm the same as in I rarely ever watch tv broadcasts to watch tv if you get me.
