    1/. HTC One.

    2/. Sony Xperia Z.

    or

    3/. Samsung Galaxy S4?

I'm out of contract in April/May.

Ask in May, new Motorola is out then too, Google own Motorola so will basically be another Nexus device

    Samsung Galaxy Note 2?

The end of you contract is miles away in phone terms. Definitely wait and see what Samsung come up with, but I doubt build quailty will be up there with the HTC One which looks like a really nice phone.

Xperia Z is an awful block of a thing if you ask me, with those square edges it does not sit nice in the hand. It feels like a brick compared to my Nexus 4.

So yeah wait and see... or get an N4 :pac:

    HTC One without a doubt

Do you root and use custom roms?

If so stay away from any HTC.

personally i love my s3 so i'm biased to say the s4.

my other choice would be a nexus direct from google with all its shineyness

    Why so?

They are a nightmare compared to say the s3.

s3 download 2 files open oden and click a button done. ( i think there is a standalone exe too)

HTC ... well on one of the first few steps you see something like this
Now Open command prompt & Point its directory to the fastboot folder (OR You can do the same as: open Fastboot folder, Press & hold shift key and then right click on the free space in the same folder. When right clicked (holding shift), you’ll see ‘Open Command window here‘ option. Click it & Command prompt will get opened pointing to the Fastboot directory).
its not gonna be as easy!

I have a mate who would class himself quite techy took an entire evening to do his HTC desire X

Yeah take your point on it being that much more "non-user" friendly, but in general, once you get the hard part sorted at the start, flashing ROMs is simples.

The build quality of the HTC would make the pain at the start worth it over the Samsungs. (Plus the FM Radio which is a must have)

    Linux??
Never had a problem myself, even non techy friends have managed to get roms working.
Personally I'm going for the HTC one, metal body vs plastic is far more important to me than a two click executable.

Oh yeah once you get ot up and running you're good to go! its that initial step (and if you ever roll back)

on the note of the FM radio do you mean HTC roms support it? I know the s3 and cyanogen have FM issues (but i think that is only the one preinstalled other downloaded work ... must test actually) but if FM radio is really important for you have a look at tunein radio. its online so beware data. since the first of march i've hit 500+mb but its been a slow week its usually closer to a gb a week for 35ish hours listening

Linux? no using windows pc.. is that what you mean?

and i know follow instructions closely enough it can be done on any phone but i have yet to find any as easy as a Samsung

S4 looks like a winner to me, although if you spend a lot of time away from a charger and are a heavy user the Note 2 is hard to beat and the size isn't noticable after a couple of days. Even with moderate use I can get an easy 2 days out of mine on full brightness and everything else turned on.

Im upgrading from an S3 to HTC one as soon as it comes out. Ive had enough of Samsungs cheap plastic phones.

Well you won't like the S4 in that case then. Apparently, it'll have a plastic removable back again this time, just like the S3..

It is exactly what I mean.
Do you know what happens when I try to run an exe in Linux?
For the record, there are plenty of 1 click tools written for htc devices and having a one click rom management tool isn't my main concern when buying or using a phone.

Or, flash a custom rom zip in your custom recovery, or Aroma Installer, for loads of choice.....there are dozens!!

stock does but i think there is an issue with custom roms

    from the wiki
FM Radio: unsupported. Use Spirit FM Radio from Play Store instead.

thats cyanogenmod 10.1 nightly other roms might be different

Cyanogenmod ROMs on any Android do not support FM Radio....its an AOSP thing.

I think you will find all Sammy based custom ROMs support FM Radio.

Seconded, no comparison in build quality, not much difference in phone quality.

Why use an emulator of an inferior operating system to perform a function that a normal operating system is perfectly capable of doing in its own right via adb/flashback?
Anyway I digress, at the end of the day, the Samsung is probably the most powerful, but most plastic and least optimised, the one is the most attractive build wise and the Sony the most likely to survive a drop in the sink.
