I love watching the fly ball but feel sorry for the dogs who lose :(

Oh yes!! Never miss Crufts on the telly...

Used to go years ago when it was on at Earls Court on Working Dogs day . One of these days, we'll be able to afford to go over to the NEC. Particularly interested in the Dobies and Shih Tzu.

I'll watch the flyball, agility and obedience, but tbh the rest of it is mostly a parade of dogs with overly exaggerated features and based far too much on what they look like. Interesting how it's creeping back on TV again.

    Best of luck Cooper!

I don't. The dogs don't know that they've lost, they've just had a ripping good time.

Was Crufts not banned from tv? As with every other, year I wont be watching.

No it's not and never has been. I think you're thinking of the BBC who used to show Crufts, but stopped in 2007 or 2008. Can't remember which year, but it was after the programme showing the puppy farms and the over-breeding of dogs.

Channel 4/More4 have had the rights ever since.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,731 ✭✭✭Bullseye1

What channel is it being shown on?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,000 ✭✭✭andreac

Its on More 4 in the evenings and i think its on Channel 4 on Sunday night for Best In Show.

Anyone interested in showing the live streaming can watch here. Its the main arena and has the obedience, dancing to music etc.

Are any of your dogs in it?

at the chance of being scorned, i think the whole thing is a bit wrong (except for the agility runs). i think shows like this have ruined the health of some breeds. i believe each dog that is entered is loved and is part of a family but who says that one breed of dog should like this and not like that. what happens to the dogs that are bread from these dogs that aren't "perfect future show winners". ok let the backlash begin

ps i do like looking at the sheepdog trials, they are talented dogs not the perfect show winner dogs.

I dont want this thread to turn into a debate on Crufts etc, it has been done before. Its merely a thread for people to chat about going or watching it, so im not going to get into any debate about showing etc.

I'm in England at the moment, sorting family stuff out, and am hoping to borrow a car to go up on Sunday, all my sibe friends are on at me to go, and some of my Irish friends will also be there that day :D

Okay, both of you calm down.
Lookitsme, please don't pull the thread off-topic over your interpretation of what OP meant by "etc".
If you'd like to start a discussion on the ethics behind the show world, please feel free to start a separate thread on the topic.
Please do not reply to this post on thread, and let's get back on topic.

Not wanting to continue to drag the thread any more off-topic, but since you asked, I own one of them, had to wait a year to get one of them actually.

<ETA> Best of luck to Andrea and Cooper, and anyone else here who is showing or competing this weekend. I'm allowed to watch it in-between the soaps!

Watching as always. Delighted about the Winner of the Utility class :) And yesterday some good choices (I think, I was so tired I was falling asleep so may not remember). REALLY love agility, totally gonna get into that with my next dog.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 709 ✭✭✭belongtojazz

I'm not particularly into showing but I am having a brilliant time watching the agility.

It is wonderful to see so many of the top agility handlers. Have to admit I wouldn't be hugely keen on running a fast dog on that carpet though, there seems to be quite a bit of slipping

Oh looking forward to the gun dog display tomorrow!! :D
Good luck to Andrea and Cooper and any other boardsies!

Thought the dog that won the 'scrufts' was gorgeous. He was found with his littermates thrown into the River Lagan in Belfast 7 years ago.

Andrea how did your friends dogs do? I didn't like the staffie that got through to group, it was moving very oddly! (Hope I haven't insulted your friends dog if that was it :P)

:D Nope, that wasn't Andrea's friend, her dog won best male it was the bitch that took the BoB. I'm also biased, but I do think the male should have taken it, he moved brilliantly.

I have my transport sorted, so am definitely going on Sunday, can't believe its the first time I've ever been, but as I'm flying home with Ryanair, I will not be shopping.

Yeah Sillymango, my friend didn't get best of breed, she was robbed!! The bitch was lame and went terrible in the best of breed. That's politics in dog showing for you.
Ill try and get the link and post it up if I can.
My other friend won the junior bitch class in Shar pei so they had a great two days!!
    Pressure is on me now!!
The Irish are actually doing great!!

Here's the video. My friend is in the red trousers.

God how did the bitch win?! Her movement was so bad compared to the dog!

She was mad lame... The minute the camera landed on her you could see her face was strained. I felt the handler could've handled it better.. I'd like to think I'd have picked her up and waved my resignation to the judge.
The pressure must be shockin, but still, the dog must come first.

Every time I post a reply I fear people could get me wrong.

Do you mean dog must come first in competition or dogs health must come first.?

    Dogs health knowing DBB :)

@ Andrea, the very best of luck to you and Cooper, he's a gorgeous looking boy :)

Can't imagine the time and dedication needed to even get to Crufts, so congratulations on getting there :)

Oh jayney no! The dog's welfare needs to be 100% priority, always.
I didn't think it could be read any other way in light of the bit I'd written before, but it just goes to show how easily the written word can often be interpreted in more than one way!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,151 ✭✭✭Irishchick

Well if a lame dog won then obviously health doesn't come first in these shows!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,737 ✭✭✭✭kylith

I only saw the BoG and I noticed the lameness and strain instantly; you could see she didn't want to walk. Was she limping in BoB? and if so the judge needs to be asked some searching questions.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,921 ✭✭✭✭hdowney

Yea I only saw BoG too and I was disgusted they'd even show her in that condition. Poor dog coulda been in mad agony being dragged round like that.

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 9,790 Mod ✭✭✭✭DBB

In fairness to More4 and Clare Balding, they do seem to make some effort to confront some of the big issues, and I'm surprised this didn't come up at some stage. An email or two to the tv station might be all it takes to get questions asked... You can be damn sure the great UK dog-loving public want some answers too.
I'd be curious to know at what stage the lameness appeared. It also begged the question in my head about whether dogs might need to be tested for painkilling drugs... For all we know this little Staffie could've been sore weeks ahead of the show, she could have a chronic or hereditary condition which should render her unsuitable for breeding, and yet here she is winning BoB because the symptoms have been masked!
Of course, it could be something completely innocent. Maybe she took a tumble. But as kylith says, searching questions need to be asked.

Feel sorry for Clare Balding with the public standing behind her booth all making faces at the camera for the folks at home... She must know it's happening behind her! :D

Anyone else read her autobiography that was published recently? It's great!

Not yet. Do want to get my hands on it though. Think it'd be a good read.

    It's a great read, I loved it. :)

Just looked back at the show footage. The staffy was lame during BOB judging *and* lame during BOG judging - the commentators actually seemed embarrassed. She has been BOB at Crufts before and probably has a host of other credits to her name so I don't understand why the owners didn't retire her, it reflects so badly on them. I can't imagine she picked up that injury on the day. So much for "happy, healthy dogs" eh?

    boomerang wrote: »

Because without all these useless titles they can't charge shed loads of money for her pups. If they cared about the health of the dog they wouldn't show her while she's lame.
