percentage Problem

    I have been told that a price of €300 is 40% higher than someone else. Anyone know what the formula is for working out what the price that 'someone else' is quoting?

    40% added to A is the same as saying A multiplied by 1.4, so to obtain the figure you require simply divide by the same amount.

    Example: 100 plus 40% equals 140.

    140/1.4 = 100.

    Thanks for your help so am I right in saying that the figure would be €214.28 approximately and my 40% higher on top of that brings it up to 300.00? :)

    Yep.

    Call it €215 for convenience. 40% of that is €85.

    The key thing to remember is that you can convert the percentage to a decimal.

    Take VAT rates, for example. 23% is 0.23, 13.5% is 0.135.

    You can therefore work out the total price including VAT, or how much something is without the VAT, by multiplying or dividing with the appropriate figure.
