Bringing over a classic tractor - problem.

I have recently bought a 1951 Ferguson TED20 off of evilbay. Lets say the registration is AB 1234. The registration is original to the tractor (brown log book came with it to prove) and it is fairly valuable. I have the tractor in Ireland right now and she is in the middle of being restored by myself.

If I try and import the tractor to Ireland will they try and make me put on either ZV 12345 or 51 DL 40001 plates? AB 1234 cannot be put on a Irish registration book?

I was wondering is it possible to get a V5C UK registration cert. for AB 1234 in my name and addressed to Co. Donegal?

I am not losing the orig. plate as it has been with the tractor from new.

    Thanks.

To be honest, it's a bit late asking questions like this now, but here are the answers:

Choice of ZV 31456 (or whatever is next in line)
51 DL 11301 (or whatever is next in line)

    No it cannot.

The DVLA will not issue a UK V5C to a non-UK address.

Move to UK or NI if you wish to keep the original UK registration mark issued. When re-registered abroad, the UK registration mark becomes dormant. If it is re-imported at a later date, it is usually re-allocated the dormant registration mark.

The old brown log book means very little. Only the current V5C shows the registration mark to be displayed. If the vehicle has been laid-up a considerable number of years, and the registration mark hasn't been transferred or re-allocated in the interim, then the process of reclaiming the number involves a number of hoops to jump through.

It will actually get 51DL120000 as all imports now start at 120k so you can tell it's an import. Great idea by the SIMI! You could always register it to your UK address and keep the plate ;) Once you can insure it for use occasionally in the South there is no problem.

No they don't Paddy001. Only Co Dublin starts at 120001. Donegal starts at 11301 as stated. ZV issues took a small jump and restarted at 31401 for Donegal.

Apologies, I was mixed up. You are correct but either way, the old reg would be nicer.

There was such a simple solution when 'ZV 9999' was reached...the govt could have issued 'reversed' ZV plates..i.e. 100 ZV, 101 ZV, 102 ZV etc etc etc ...up to 9999 ZV.

Instead they simply followed the ZZ (temporary plate series) and issued ZV 10000 upwards (i.e. 'ZV' followed by five digits - which are totally NOT in keeping with old Irish plates, which always have a max of 6 digits i.e. ZV 0000 or 0000 ZV)?!?

Rant over. Apologies for hijacking the thread.
My suggestion would be to go for a '51 DL 11000' plate. At least
then you have the option of changing it to something more appropriate
if the govt ever 'fixes' the ZV series. (If you go for a ZV nnnnn plate, you are
stuck with that forever). We live in hope!

It's such a cack system here. If you are going to show the tractor keep the UK plates on it and fix the ZV plates over them on the road. That's what i do with my 101 at shows when I remove the civvy plates to show the military plates.

If you dont intend driving it on the road leave it as it is you should still be able to get fire & theft insurance on it as you only want to take it to vintage shows.

Just get the english logbook sent to a friend or relatives address in england. on a 1951 tractor i dont think you'll get any bother from the authorities , its not as if you'll be doing 10000 miles a year on it.Do you intend driving it on public highways much?

The ins. co will notify revenue if it remains on the UK reg for longer than 30 days.

Get a logbook off an old irish tractor and insure it that way , stick the irish plates on when driving on public highways and if you ever sell it or show it revert back to the original uk plates , keep the original uk reg and logbook safe.:D:eek:;):D

Haha , i know , I'm half joking , it's a tractor after all, not going to be clocking up 1000kms a week or anything.
