We are looking to buy a 2009 merc 220 cdi avantgarde estate. We would be bringing it in from Northern Ireland. I have been looking to see if its band E (tax of 750) or band F (tax of 1200). Some websites seem to indicate the co2 emissions are 188g per km which would have it in band E but others put it at 194g per km which would be band F. Does anyone have one or know the definite position? Many thanks.

It will be on the v5 document.

It depends on the gearbox OP. Enter in the reg on cartell.ie and it will tell you the exact CO2 emissions rating for the car you're interested in.

As far as I remember, they introduced 'Blue Efficiency' models in 2010, which have better emissions and therefore less VRT and road tax.

Band E or band F is really dirty for a 2.1 litre diesel, a BMW 320d from the same era was in band B or C (depending on the gearbox), and even a 330d or 335 d is at most in band E. If you're prepared to pay that level of motor tax, you should at least get a car with a proper large capacity six cylinder engine.

Do you have the reg? Stick it in to www.cartell.ie, and it should give the CO2 emissions for the vehicle.

Seems to have issues with some NI reg's, but works very well for other UK registrations.

Thanks for all the responses... Don't have the reg but will ask some questions from seller tomorrow and try and get the definite position.

You can have two aparently similar models in any year with different emmissions/VRT/Road tax.
Similar models sometimes have different emmissions due to tyre/wheelsizes etc.
The actual individual emmissions are shown on the UK Registration Documents.
Manufacturers are continuously trying to lower the emmissions/tax levels and this can happen at any time of any year, sometimes emmissions change two or even three times in a year, they don't wait for the Dec/Jan to introduce improvements, the only way of determining the exact emmissions is to get the info from the origionsl registrstion document
