Hey, I've recently had the opportunity to work with a contractor of one of the major telecoms operators in Ireland as a transmission engineer. They pay reasonable but I would be more interested in it as a stepping stone. I'm from a computer engineering background but have little experience there.

Is a transmission engineer a sustainable position - i.e. is the industry expected to wane in the future?

Is it a common profession? (i cant seem to find much info on it..)

Is it well paid? are there others of you out there in this line of work that could give an example gradient of the pay?

the work involves planning network links and mapping the network as a whole. From what i've seen its quite a technical area which I would be happy about and theres a possibility in the future of being cisco certified with more IP based work.

    Any thoughts? Thanks

depends on what you mean by transmission ?

    Medium term

If you mean data then there is the whole IPv6 / 10Gb / Fibre to the home waiting in the wings.

IT uses between 3-5% of global electricity with comms equipment using half that, so big savings to be made if replaced with more energy efficient kit.

What the short term holds depends on local investment by particular companies and government and that I don't know.

Thanks Cap'n - yeah it would be data - mainly microwave links at the moment I think. Do you know anything about typical salary?
