Is my drive shaft f****d?

I have a 03 Nissan Almera and recently I've noticed a knocking noise from the front passengers side wheel. I got under it today and shook the drive shaft and there was significant play. Will the whole thing have to be replaced?

    Thanks for any help.

A lot of play, I put my hand around the shaft and it didn't take much effort for it to move up and down.

It's more noticeable when I'm turning at low speeds. Also when the steering wheel is fully locked it makes a whining noise.

The CV joint is attached to the hub yes? So this can be changed separately from the shaft?

Most likely the cv joint, its the bit on the end of the shaft that goes into the hub, is the rubber boot torn on the end of the shaft?

No it didn't look to be, it's still intact with a band clamp. I'll have a closer look tomorrow.
