Stolen car plates

Last night I discovered that the number plates had been nicked off my car. Pain in the arse I know. I'm just wondering aloud here on one or two things.

Firstly, the car tax has been out since the start of the year and althought the car hasn't been driven as I didn't get her parked up and signed up as off the road, it was on the road. On this basis will I will be lumped with paying the road tax for 3 months or would I be let away with signing her off the road? I suppose that the Gardai need to be informed in case the plates are misued either way but I'd prefer to not have the tax bill for a car I've not used if possible. Secondly, where is best (ie cheapest) to get the car fitted with road legal plates?

For the record, she is now parked in my garden where the local cats can ruin her with paw prints :)

    Firstly, hard luck :(

    Now,

Report the plates stolen immediately to the Gardai - Right now.

Are you planning on using the car again soon? if not, you do not need to do anything relating to tax until you plan on putting it back into use.

You get form RF100 and have it signed off by gardai AFTER the period of non-use, this is then submitted with the renewal form to the tax office, this relieves you of the arrears. simples.

Re the plates: any motor factors/halford etc will make you up a set, cost circa €25 generally, if you ask kindly, they'll fit them for you

The only thing I am planning to do with it is to sell it. It's due an NCT as well but that's not my main concern for the moment. Seeing as it's in my name, is there no requirement to notify the relevants in advance that it is off the road? Or is it always retrospectively done?

Regards plates, is that for a pair or per plate? I assume that it's done on the spot.

Just call the Guards and report the plates stolen.

Was it parked on the roadside?

Plates may have been stolen be a neighbour who was attempting to get it lifted by the council / guards.

No, as said already. It is done retrospectively. JUST REPORT THE PLATES STOLEN or you may end up with:

toll bills building up by the bucket load,
    tax fines,
or worst case scenario: the guards busting your door down as your plates may have been used on a vehicle used in a crime.

The guards wont care whether its taxed, on the road, nct'd. insured or whatever, to be honest they wont care that the plates have been nicked either, but they will make a note of it and put it on the system. It will cover your ass if needs be. Just report it and go on as before.

Or a kid looking for ornaments for his bedroom wall,
Or folk with a clone ready to go,
Or a hit man with a similar getaway vehicle,
    Or aliens..

the list goes on, all the op can really do is report it, and buy some more, if the motor's not going to be on road yet, I wouldnt even bother with the plates tbh..

I had thought of that as well. The area is mainly P+D but there are a few coveted free spots on the road where it was and ample free parking spots on side roads.

Or parked on a Public road - as it was. It's ok now as it's in his garden but parked on the road he was also liable to get done for no tax.

Id put the money on neighbours then. If it was in one of the non P&D spots im sure someone wanted shot of it.

Kids dont steal plates theyd steal the badges off it.

Happened me a few years ago too. Fockers unscrewed the plates, removed them and then took the time to put the screws back in! Very mannerly:P The guys in the motor factors got a good laugh out of that when I told him I didn't need the screws he was giving me with the new plates.

Report it to the Gardai without delay OP.

You will get new plates for no more then 20 quid. Somewhere like this does them for €9.90 each including P&P

It's so different here in Australia. You knock off/lose, damage/ have one or two plates stolen the car cannot be driven. You need to get NEW plates issued and put on before it can be put on the road again (usually a day or two). There is no place allowed to knock up a new set of plates.

    This.

I see you have moved it onto your own property, which was a smart move. Otherwise it could legally have been removed and scrapped by the local council.
