Took ownership of a 2003 VW Passat this afternoon, and the odometer and on board computer are both in KM ,, is there an easy way of changing back to miles or is it a job for the main dealer..

Instructions are here. Very easy to do. If you were in Galway I'd sort it out for you.

I just got a cable off ebay for about 15 quid. I registered the cable with ross-tech but I don't think you need to to do this.

    http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/cars/vwmkIV.html

    [Select]
    [17 - Instruments]
    [Recode - 07]

Write down the existing coding for future reference.
    Enter 5-digit code from below
    [Do It!]

Look at the first two digits in the coding. Add the values for the options together to get the correct coding.
    00 - No available equipment
+01 - Brakepad wear sensor warning active
    +02 - Seatbelt warning active
+04 - Washer fluid level warning active
+08 = Seatbelt Warning active (NAR only)
+10 = Seatbelt Warning Driver & Passenger active (NAR only)
    +16 = Secondary Display (Radio/Navigation) active

Look at the third digit in the coding (Market version):
1 - "EU" 24 hour clock (may result in odometer in km in 2002+ clusters)
    2 - "USA" 12 hour clock
3 - "Canada" 12 hour clock (may result in odometer in km in 2002+ clusters)
"The third digit in the code is the country code. The codes are:
4 - "UK" 24 hour clock (should result in odometer in miles) this is the digit you'll need to switch to.
    5 - Japan
    6 - Saudi Arabia
    7 - Australia

Look at the fourth digit in the coding (Cylinders):

    3 - No Service Interval (2002+ models)
    4 - 4-cylinder (1999-2001 models)
    6 - 6-cylinder (1999-2001 models)

Look at the fifth digit in the coding (Distance impulse multiplier):
    2 - 3538
    4 - 3648 (some 2002+ models)

So, if you want to have Seatbelt warning and washer fluid warning only in a 2001 Canadian 6-cylinder vehicle, (add 00+02+04 = 06),3,6,2 = 06362.

    Not Your Ornery Onager

Just wondering why you want to change to miles - is it going to the UK?

Not going anywhere. It's just the fact that I can work out my mpg better than l/100 km . Also the miles left in tank rather than km. Plus I would prefer to see 120k or so miles up on her rather than 194k km. It's no big deal really just the habit of being used to miles.

I had the opposite problem - in miles, would prefer KM. Thanks for the link, Ronnie Beck!

Did you pay separate for the license key from Ross tech? If not you won't be able to do coding unfortunately.

I changed that same code over christmas to get rid of the brake pad warning. I 99$ registered my ebay cable. Not sure if it would work without registering it. I've vcds lite there too. I'll check and see if it works with that.

As far as i know Ronnie you can't do coding with the shareware version only read and reset faults and measuring blocks.

I'll check now. Was messin about earlier so need to plug it in anyway. Think it said on the website 'limited unless registered'.

It's about 6 or 7 years since i tried coding with a shareware cable - you couldn't do it then. To be honest haven't looked back since getting the full version, couldn't be without it.

I have vcds light and I paid for the licence. I can code some stuff like activating cruise control and changing from miles to km, brake pad warning on and off etc.

I dont think mine will work with a b5.5 passat. It definatly wont work on the mk5 platform cars

Worked for me in shareware versions.

    That's on a 2003 T4. More or less B5 clocks.

Whether or not it will work on a B5.5 passat I don't know.

    What car and year?

I have used it on loads from polos to passats all years etc etc.. I have given it to a friend who used it to code Xenon lights on his A4 and its being used on my old Skoda.

The cracked versions must be getting better, still when it's connected to my ECU and coding something important on the car i'd prefer to put my faith in the Licensed Ross tech version for stability and the back up support.I'd hate to see the consequences of a dodgy crack or patch causing the program to crash mid coding.
