    Hi,

I'm looking to buy an android tablet just to familiarize myself with the operating system. I'm looking at the google nexus 7, although I'm wondering are the less expensive alternatives with the same specifications. I would like a 7 inch screen, hdmi out and gps. It doesn't have to support 3g as I can turn my phone into a wifi hotspot if needed.

    Thanks

Have you looked into the Amazon Kindle Fire HD? It is heavily skinned by Amazon, but a fantastic tablet for the price. There is also the iPad Mini but that is much more expensive! I can't think of any other ones at the moment.

Blackberry Playbook is getting BB10 and will run Android apps.

    Only €149 in Currys.

Good if price is the main concern

Well BlackBerry 10 only supports apps that have been repackaged from the Android Play Store, and they're usually horrible looking and often crash etc.

Or you can side-load the apps on to your PlayBook, but they're not going to run as smoothly as an app designed for BB10.

Nexus 7 in your best bet if you want quality, and a pure Android experience. You will also get all the latest updates straight away as it is a Nexus device.

I spend most of the morning looking at playbook reviews. In particular I went looking at playbook vs nexus 7 reviews. Some websites are a little old (back when the PB was closer to €400). Admittedly, the Blackberry app world is somewhat reminiscent of Nokia's symbian store with the lack of apps, but being a windows phone user, I'm not too worried about lack of apps once the device can do what I want it to do. The HDMI is a big plus on the Playbook. Once I can watch movies and surf the web, I think I will be happy enough. I think similarly priced android devices (€149) might be lacking in performance. Today, I will go into the city and see if I can get the nexus and the Playbook running side by side and make my choice.

I've had a PlayBook for a year now, I still think it is a great tablet. When it gets BB10 it will be even better. For 150 Euro you can't go wrong.
