Hi folks. I use a '04 Peugeot Partner 1.9D for work (painfully slow van BTW).
Yesterday morning it wouldn't start, turned the key, followed by a click and a whirring noise from somewhere under the bonnet.
Didn't have time to investigate any further so just got a loan of another motor for the day from a friend.
Would this be a problem with the starter motor or solenoid? And how do I get it going by myself? (can't afford to have it towed to the mechanics place, just want to get it going so I can drive it down)

    Cheers

Push starting it is probably the easiest way to get it going

On my own here so a push start isn't really an option!

    Borrow jump leads.

It's more likely to be your battery. The cold kills them.

If you got your friend to lend you a car, I'm sure you can get him to give you a push.

I would try jump starting it first as the battery may just be flat

OP are the dash lights dimming when you are trying to start it?

Friend is working. Just happened to be off yesterday. Not the battery, tried jump leads yesterday and they made no difference.

Then a push seems to be the only cheap option.

Nope. Turn key, dashboard lights up, then a rapid whirring noise coming from somewhere under the bonnet in front of the drivers position. I've read online that if its the starter that a belt of a hammer may free it if its stuck. I just don't know what I'm looking for

You might try this, but you still need 2 people for that.
One person must turn ignition and try to start, while other person will be hitting starter with an hammer.]
