Kennelling Dilemma

I'm considering the pros and cons of putting one of our dogs into kennels or not during the summer holidays.

I have 2 dogs and one has always stayed behind, he has access to the garden and is taken inside at night by neighbours, walked and fed by them.

the other dog is a rescue JRTx and is a bit unsocial so I'm looking into different options for her.

Option one is she stays at home as well, she has a warm kennel outside and a large run. However she would have to either sleep outside in the kennel or be left alone inside in our house - she doesn't get on well enough with our neighbours dogs to sleep at their house.
My neighbours son would walk, feed and play with her during the day.

Option two is I put her into kennels for the 2 weeks.

As she is not particularly social - would this stress her more by doing this than by leaving her at home?

When you say not social, do you mean with just other dogs, or do you mean in general.

I would much prefer kennelling to leaving her there for 2 weeks. A good kennel will do their best to ensure she is not stressed.

could you socialise her more with your neighbours dog between now and the summer, they may start to get on better over a few weeks and then they could look after both your dogs. or you could leave her outside in kennel with your other dog at night. that way they have company of each other and wouldnt be so lonely than on her own.

The right kennels can make a big difference.

When our two went into kennels for what was supposed to be two and a half weeks while we were moving house but turned out to be seven weeks, the dogs came back in super form and condition.

The kennels that we used allow dogs to mix once they have proven themselves to be reliable, one of our dogs is a rescue and was not always the most dog friendly but since she came back she is much better with other dogs and actively seeks to play.

We've been trying to socialise her with people and other dogs for the past few months. She tends to be erratic in the way she reacts, so one day you might come to the house and she'll be fine with you, the next time she'll go bananas at you barking non stop. We are used to it and deal with it, but my neighbours wouldn't be as tolerant.

she also has a tendency to leg it if left off lead and my neighbours wouldn't be as good at this as we are, it's so easy to leave a door open and their garden isn't enclosed.

I just worry that she would spend the whole time in the kennels barking like a lunatic and stressing both herself and the other poor dogs:rolleyes:

Try them somewhere first for a weekend first. Having been there and then been collected reduces the stress of future stays.

The kennel owner will let you know if there is a problem.

How long are you going for? Can 100% trust your neighbour he'll def walk her. I would go for a good Kennell, maybe put her in for a night or two when your not going away and see how it goes?

Whereabouts do you live OP? I know two ladies in Dublin who don't have dogs of their own, but look after individual small dogs in their own homes hen their owners are away.

I'm considering a kennel later this year and I'd have to have left himself there first, for a few hours... Then for a night, then for a weekend and finally for a week or two. Whoever you choose, if you do... Let your dog(s) know that when they are dropped off, they'll be coming home... Eventually!

And speak to other users of the kennel you do end up using!

Im in Limerick, ill need to look at my options, either that or keep fingers crossed that she changes shortly, it really suits the other dog to stay home. He'd be traumatized by going into a kennel.

To look at her asleep now you'd swear butter wouldnt melt:)

Friend of mine runs a fab home boarding service in North Cork - Ilse Sas. She comes highly recommended, and not just by me, lol! I know a few people who travel from Limerick and from Kildare to board their dogs with her - it's that good!

    Her facebook page:

My brother swears by Meskell's in Castleconnell. His dog Gizmo LOVES staying there! Man who runs it is great with Giz.

I got a good 'vibe' off this guy too. Gonna leave Hugo with them for a few hours next week (free service) and see how we go.
