How safe is Google Play?

So over the past year or so there have been a couple of scare stories regarding Apps on google play. Today the Japanese Government are warning Android users not to use Google Play but instead use provider apps.

I know that Google have recently tried to address the issue of dodgy apps and most users on a forum like this are unlikely to be caught out by such apps but I can't help feel that there is a distinct danger for the casual user, especially now that tablets are so easy to use and download apps from that even your Granny could do it.

So do you think Google play is safe? Do you trust that your family members would spot a potentially dodgy app before downloading it?

To be honest, yes of course there is that risk, but my family members would have just as much if not more of a risk of downloading some virus etc. if I gave them my laptop for an hour than if I gave them my phone for an hour. 100% safety can never be guaranteed when it comes to the internet, no matter what device is accessing it.

That particular app, sexy fun times or whatever it was called is a ridiculous app to download from any site, and I dare say if you downloaded the same type of app from a third party site it would be riddled with a variety of delightful viruses and spyware too.

Thing is, everyone is aware of the risks of a virus on a computer and these days 90% of people have some form of anti-virus (at a minimum) on their PC.

However, I've asked people about their knowledge of the risk of malware from apps and have been shocked to realise that many people seem to think that Apps are self-contained programs that are 100% trustworthy. They seem to think that buying an app is equivalent to buying a piece of software from PC World and that there is no risk!

I suppose that's why I'm asking the question really, do you think people understand that there is a risk from apps? Also, in fairness to Apple*, their app store has had fewer scares thanks in part to their ridiculously stringent policies on getting an app to the store.

*funny how even in the early 90's Apple was the good guy fighting the evil Microsoft empire and now they are the Microsoft of the 90s! :)
