Am I correct in thinking that it is good practice to put the front tyres on the back and the back on the front after a while?

Depends on if they're directional but yeah, change them at least front to back.

Best grip should be on rear tyres.

    Would any garage do this?

OP are you declaring an array called Rotating........ :pac:

    /geek

OT, depends on the car. Some have a staggered setup, beware. Check the condition of the thread too ie is it wearing away quicker on one side, bulges etc

No offense but this decision should be left to a competent mechanic.

My previous car was front-wheel drive so naturally the front tyres wore faster and I used to ask the garage to rotate the wheels when getting a service. However my current car is a rear-wheel drive and the tyres appear to be wearing evenly so I don't really think it's necessary for me to rotate.

    Agree/disagree?

Only if it states on the tire that they are multidirectional.

I don't know much about tyres, how would I know if they are multi directional? I wouldn't of even thought that they had to spin a certain way :o

    Pointless IMO.
I let my fronts wear, then replace them, then when the backs go, put the ones from the front on there, and the new ones on the front.
I don't care if the manufacturers who want you to buy more tyres say something different.

There will be a curved arrow clearly visible on the sidewall indicating that the tyre should only spin in that direction if they are unidirectional.

Changing tyres from side to side is not good practice. Front to rear can be done once all 4 are the same size and spec.

Just out of interest what would happen if you put a tyre on to spin the wrong way?

You'd have four or five reverse gears and one forward gear!

Instead of throwing water out behind the tyre it would throw it back in front of the tyre, create a bigger puddle and aquaplane more easily. Supposedly.

The threads would suck the water into the center of the tyre instead of forcing the water out and away from the tyres contact patch with the road.

Why would it result in you buying more tyres? Buying 2 tyres each year is the same as buying 4 tyres every 2 years......plus its more convenient to get all four in one go.

    Here's a guide OP:

I reckon a tyre will never wear completely evenly and on each corner it will wear in a slightly different direction. changing the wheel around will mean that it's wearing the higher points quicker.
