    Hi All,

Can somebody tell me the difference between "FDI Flows" and "FDI positions"?

FOR Example, from the OECD database I found figures for the amount of FDI into Ireland in 2012, the reports I found are split into two - FDI flows by industry and FDI positions by industry and I am finding it hard to distinguish between both.

Any suggestions will be grealy appreciated.

    Thanks.

The flows are the inflows and/or outflows within a certain period.
The positions are the overall investment level at a certain point in time.

The positions will result from the cumulative flows over multiple periods.

In the same way that income is a flow and wealth is a stock; income adds to/removes from wealth. FDI flows add to/remove from the FDI position

Unrelated to your post OP but

If you want a real challenge OP, check out the CSO's FDI statistics and try to find our how they add up!

i.e. its clearly not just flows that are changing the stock position in those figures.

    http://www.cso.ie/en/media/csoie/releasespublications/documents/economy/2011/fdi_2011.pdf

I've always had trouble with them.
