Badly Hung Door Exterior Door Frame?

    Hi all,

I had an exterior door fitted about 4 years ago, good quality, double glazed, security lock etc.

I always had trouble closing it slightly, it always seemed to rub a bit, and recently the handle broke.

I went to get a replacement handle and the guy in the shop said it might be a badly fitted door (as the handle was a tough/durable one).

I had a look at the security locks and the bolt on the door was rubbing against the adjoining catch on the door frame. So much so you could visibly see the fresh metal on the catch on the door frame.

I removed that catch on the frame, leaving 3. All seemed well for a day or 2, but now its sticking/catching again when you close it. And same opening it.

I could get the guy who fitted the door to come back and have a look.

But is there anything I can do before that?

Apart from, the catching on opening and shutting, the door seems well enough framed.

But you can clearly see where pressure is needed to be applied on the door handle to open and close the door. Its a right pain too.

    Any suggestions? Thanks

EDIT: I have just checked and the security lock/bolt at the bottom of the door is now rubbing on the catch on the door frame. The 2 at the top are clear.

Each of the hinges can be adjusted with an Allen Key, it's probably not the frame, but the door leaf is not square, to the frame.

Don't try it yourself, unless you are familiar, get someone who fits doors who will adjust in a few minutes, and probably for the price of a pint.

Try your local supermarket notice board, or post your location here, you might get a reply

    Hi Martin,

    Many thanks for your reply.

So it's not the alignment with the locking bolts on the door with the catches on the door frame? but its the hinges on the inside of the door that have to be adjusted?

Yea, adjusting the hinges changes the angle and alignment of the door leaf, so the lock, and receivers are aligned, sounds like the handle broke because of the pressure needed to engage the lock, over time.
Most doors will move a little as they settle in after fitting, maybe your door has been off, for a while.

That analysis sounds spot on Martin. Thanks for that.
