    Hi Folks,

I need to strip a lot of old paint of a wooden staircase, I bought one tub of Nitromors and well put simply I will need a lot more.

Any recommendations on where to buy a cost effective alternative in Dublin?
Or should I use something different?

    Thanks in advance!

Hi, did the nitromors work well on your stairs. I need to do a few doors. How long do you think it would take to strip one door. I have never used this product before.
    Thanks

I was removing several layers of old paint from a staircase, sanding was getting me nowhere and yes with some patient and elbow grease it worked. However we used a whole tin (can't remember the size) to do two steps!

I recall (many years ago) such a task. In the end found it better to use a blow-torch to burn the paint off. Now other may advise that might not be a good idea if its lead paint....

try to get fleetwood paint stripper, much better than nitrimors, probably the best on market now.
Due to h&s nitrimors and all other paint stripper's are not as good as the stuff you used to get in the past.

That's great thanks - would a local builders suppliers stock this, say Smyths in Walkinstown?

Fleetwood have a trade centre on Davitt road, beside the canal if that helps.. I know you've already used some but make sure you've goggles on and gloves, and a shave hook would help too,

Just wanted to say thanks lads. Job is done.

I bought some regular nitromors and left it on over night and then used a shave hook and wire wool to remove the paint, I needed to repeat this three times but job done!

How much work did you do and how long did it all take. Did you get all the way back to original wood. How much nitromors did you use.

    Thanks

Timewise, I was limited with work etc, so each evening, I would clean stairs, apply a coat and then leave it for 20-24 hours and then scrap off. Then repeat that process.

It took the best part of days so about 10 hours and 2.5 litres of nitromors.

Retrospectively, If I had to do it again, I would consider a blow torch....

I have used nitromors a good bit, mostly on painted metal & varnished timber.

I have never left it on that long (not arguing that you used it incorrectly or anything).
I found that if left too long, it would loose its effectiveness. Usually I would scour the surface, brush on the nitromors (fresh from the tin, which is kept closed), let it sit for 30 mins to an hour and then scrape off with a stiff blade scraper.

How much nitromors do you think it would take to completely strip one door and frame.
It probably works out cheaper to buy larger amounts so if I know how much is needed for one door/frame I can buy the right amount for several doors.
I have to strip about seven or eight doors & frames.
    Thanks

I stripped every door, architrave, doorframe and skirting board in a three-bedroomed house. However, I used a heat gun to remove the bulk of it and only used the Nitromors with steel wool to remove the final residue. It was tough work but worth it in the end. I don't think I could have managed it using Nitromors alone.

None taken, it's not an opinion it's simply what I did, I can't see if leaving it on for only 30 mins would have been better or worse. The only reason I did it this way was my local hardware store advised that this method would be best.
