Most Efficient Way to heat water tank

    Hi,

I have an oil burner to heat my house with a 3 zone control panel. Zone 1 is the water tank and zone 2 & 3 are upstairs and downstairs and they are all controlled using wireless thermostats.

I asked the plumber about the most efficient way to heat the water and he said to leave zone 1 (water tank) on all day as getting water from cold to hot is expensive. He said if its kept at a high temperature, the running cost will be low.

Does this make sense? We really only need hot water in the morning for an hour and in the evenings. Would it not make more sense to just heat the water while I am heating the rest of the house in the morning and evening?

A lot depends on how well the hot tank is insulated. If it has a sprayed on foam jacket, then it does not lose a lot of heat, and if you only need hot water morning and evening, then yes, topping off the hot water when the heating is on will be better for the system than running the boiler all the time.

As the hot tank has a thermostat on it so that the hot water is only heated when it's needed, and not all the time the zone is active, the boiler only fires when the hot water requires it.

Keeping it on all day is not really necessary, though if you are not using water during the day, it probably won't fire anyway.

Shore, if it was easy, everybody would be doin it.😁

Ok, thanks. I will try just running it when I am heating the other zones.

The hot tank is relatively new and is pre-insulated as far as I know so hopefully, it is not going to drain too much heat.

Unless we need hot water regularly during the day, I don't think it's necessary to keep it set to "on" all the time (even if the boiler isn't firing all the time).
