RAM Question

    Hi,

Im putting a build together based on a ASUS P8Z77-V Deluxe and i7-3770k.

Im not going to overclock straight away but will in the future. With that in mind what speed ram should I go for? Will a faster ram speed get recognized at a lower speed prior to overclocking? Corsair Vengeance seems to have a good reputation. So what makes sense now 1600Mhz or something higher to futureproof for the over clocking? Is there a sweet spot in terms of price?

Or would 1600Mhz suffice for now and if overclocking in a year price points will have improved significantly?

Also what qualifies a build on hardwareversand for a SB version of win8 ? What components need to be ordered?

    Ta

Just get the cheapest 1333/1600Mhz 8GB kit you can find. RAM timings really don't make a difference to Overclocking these days on Intel. Also, I should point out that the 3770k is wasted unless you are running heavily threaded programs i.e. programs which will make use of the Hyperthreading on the i7. If they don't then the i5 will perform identical.

On Hardwareverdsand don't use the part picker, just find the parts you want and add them to the basket. I'd also recommend going for one of the ASRock Z77 as they tend to be better value.

    ok interesting thanks for that!

Thats what Ive been doing on Hardwareverdsand, but surely you cant just order an SB edition of win8 pro on its own or everyone would just do it, i.e. there must be a prerequisite that your order MB, processor etc or am I wrong?

Just add all the parts into a basket. I wouldn't go near that Configuration tool on HWVS. Just find all the different parts and put them in the basket.

Make sure you answer these questions and put up the build you're thinking of buying, it's always better to have a few people look just to make sure you're getting the best value for your money.

That woud have been the case of Window 7 (technically at least) however Win 8 SB version incorporates a personal use license now, which you can transfer to another PC you own.

There is no "full retail" version anymore.

How can I use the software? We do not sell our software or your copy of it – we only license it. Under our license, we grant you the right to install and run that one copy on one computer (the licensed computer) as the operating system on a computer that you build for your personal use, or as an additional operating system running on a local virtual machine or a separate partition, subject to the restrictions outlined under “Are there things I’m not allowed to do with the software?” The license is only for use by one person at a time, and only if you comply with all the terms of this agreement. The software is not licensed to be used as server software or for commercial hosting - so you may not make the software available for simultaneous use by multiple users over a network. For more information on multiple user scenarios and virtualization, see the Additional Terms.

Can I transfer the software to another computer or user?
You may transfer the software to another computer that belongs to you. You may also transfer the software (together with the license) to a computer owned by someone else if a) you are the first licensed user of the software and b) the new user agrees to the terms of this agreement. To make that transfer, you must transfer the original media, the certificate of authenticity, the product key and the proof of purchase directly to that other person, without retaining any copies of the software. You may use the backup copy we allow you to make or the media that the software came on to transfer the software. Anytime you transfer the software to a new computer, you must remove the software from the prior computer. You may not transfer the software to share licenses between computers. You may transfer Get Genuine Windows software, Pro Pack or Media Center Pack software only together with the licensed computer.
