So it seems everyone's favourite crazy FG senator is at it again, having revealed that she's going on a holiday... I mean "search for truth" across the water on the abortion issue paid for by a bible-thumping group that I'm pretty sure contributes to Youth Defence's war chest.

Is there any way to make them keep her?

Who cares? It's her choice to go there.

The implication in your post that everyone who is pro-life has sinister motives is also a touch ridiculous.

Why does such a fully funded trip to a place with a completely different health system scream "conflict of interest" to me? If they wanted to "get the facts", wouldn't the UK be a more comparable option in terms of how such a regime would be implemented here?

Aren't they not allowed accept stuff from foreigners?

    Great choice of words.

When she comes back from holidays a builder will have accidentally converted her water feature in her garden into an Olympic size pool with wave machine.

    Hate the way that happens...

Because if planned paranthood or some such organization decided to fly Ivana Bachik over to be wined and dined in New York and Washington as part of a "fact finder" people would be rightly screaming blue murder about a conflict of interest

Mis-leading title. Article says it is an Irish pro-life group

She can go to that if she wishes. People can decide to vote for someone on the basis of whether or not they are pro-life or pro-choice anyway.

For example, if on evaluating the policies I found two candidates were pretty much neck on neck on other issues, things like whether or not they advocate reducing the abortion limit or have pro-life considerations would come into play.

You're advocating special-interest clientelism - it's clear as day they arew being sent on this trip to try and secure their vote. What could legitimately be learned from the US experience? The health systems involved aren't even comparable

That's the problem. She's been rejected a number of times by the good denizens of Galway, yet she is still appointed to the Seanad!

I think her "search for truth" is probably more likely to be a search for cheap shopping and duty free.

She's going to NY, the baby slaughtering capital of Earth. It's equivalent to going to Afghanistan to learn about controlling heroin production.

It seems very much more like a "search for trough" than a "search for truth" to me now

Let's apply that same logic to the drop in candidate in Dún Laoghaire - Ivana Bacik shall we?

The point is irrelevant, both were elected to the second house even if they didn't get to the Dáil.

I think people insofar as they are individuals can travel to varying places and go to varying conferences even if they are funded by other people.

People vote on the basis of these issues. I am far more likely to vote for someone who expresses pro-life sentiment over someone who advocates for widening the net on abortion. It is a consideration when I vote. As are other policies including the family, and taxation, job creation, getting homeless people off the streets and so on.

People vote for the people who will represent society's best interests. When I voted for Boris Johnson for London mayor for example, I voted because I felt that his policies made him the better candidate, the same is true for any future election I'll have a say on.

I think there's "elected" and then there's "elected".:(

You didn't vote for him because he's a bit nuts and spouts mad crap?

Cos that's why I'd vote for him.

Considering how she won't even pay for a train, it's not surprising she's on a free flight somewhere.

It's not exactly democracy when the people don't get to make the decision - Taoiseach's nominees being the biggest example here

Yeah, because propaganda nonsense about pro-choice people and their insidious and evil motives and desires is not a tactic you have _ever_ employed is it??

I'm pretty sure the same can be said for ivana bacik. What has the mess that is the Seanad got to do with it?

I believe Liveline today was very funny after she rang into complain that she'd been rumbled for speaking out of both sides of her mouth on gay parents adopting.

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.
