Question about car and fumes?

Hi all, first things first, Im a male and I dont know much about cars at all, (yeah yeah stop your laughing, Im aware of the stigma) so would appreciate any advice on this issue:

My car the last few weeks has started to emit thin fumes from under the bonnet when Im sitting in traffic or just after a short journey, when I opened the bonnet it seemed to be coming from the engine or just where i put the oil in. I checked the oil and topped it up so there is enough in it but Im quite worried to see fumes coming out of my car without knowing why. They are not thick belching fumes, but enough to be noticeable. My car has never given me any major trouble (just the usual brake pads, new tyres etc) and its a 1998 1.3 Hyundai Acccent. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Does the place you put oil in have a cap on it (is it closed) ?

Yes its closed securely after I added the oil, I noticed theres a kind of milky browny colour just underneath the cap though, dont know if thats normal or not, I know nothing about the workings of it tbh.

Milky browny? Could be the head gasket or coolant getting into the engine.

Check your coolant level, the gunk might just be due to short trips but it could be signs of coolant mixing with oil too.

milky browny butter like thing underneath the cap means that oil is reacting with moisture.
It might be normal if you are mostly driving short distances, but it might as well mean that head gasket is starting to go.

Anyway - i don't think it has any relation to fumes you are getting.

It's actually hard to say anything, without knowing exactly where are they coming from. Maybe exhaust manifold is not attached tight or is it cracked... (it's a set of 4 metal pipes coming out of the engine which further join into two and eventually one pipe which goes underneath the car through silences and end up in the back as exhaust pipe.

Did you spill any oil when you added some?
Was it an oil change you did or a top up?
Is the oil level OK, not overfull.
If the exhaust manifold gets oil on it it can burn off and cause smoke.
