Car sale figures - genuine or not?

I read recently that last month 30% of VW's and 40% of Fords were registered in the last couple of days of the month.

What's going on, are all of those dealer pre-regs to boost sales figures? If so the actual number of cars being sold must be a great deal lower than claimed. And if there are so many pre-regs out there there must be some good deals to be had.

    Anyone know any more?

Yes most likely alot of pre reg.
I know my parents bought a pre reg passat last year at a nice price with lots of toys which they would never have ordered and got it at a good price. Car was only regd a few days and was not driven at all. The pre reg cars did not appear on the dealer website either.

Could registering be construed as faking the stats?

Not really. Its not as if they dump the cars. They will be sold on quickly. Its used to meet monthly targets and there can be discount from the manufacturer for a number of demos per year and I think some tax benefits due to this discount and the lower final selling point although im not up to speed on that. I figure it gives them more freedom on retail price too.
