I am student who just got a placement in IT company wondering if I need to wear work clothes as formal or just my own clothes.

You need to find out the dress code for that specific company.

For for your first few days wear something formal maybe, slacks and a shirt.
At least till you get a feel for what is expected and the rest of your colleagues are wearing.

Exactly, what I would do is go slacks and shirt day 1 and then play it by ear after that, nothing worse than going in to a new place underdressed, you will have enough pressure settling down the first day to be worrying about it.

I've seen IT places vary from tracksuits/jeans to full shirt/tie so it totally depends on the culture of the organisation as opposed to being sector specific.

If you can't find out in advance I'd go with shirt and pants and a tie in my pocket just in case. :)

I agree with everyone else's advice, I just wanted to add:

People take you more seriously if you wear serious clothes.

Op, it totally depends on what type of office you work in. Best bet is to ring hr or whoever you dealt with to get the placement and ask them. At least you will know the official dress code that you can start with. It's a standard question they answer for people starting somewhere.

This is so true, unfortunately. I'm in TEFL, which is an industry with a laid-back dress code. The problem is that this contributes towards a) other people thinking our job is a doss/a joke and b) students thinking we're unprofessional. There's a lovely girl at work who is really well-qualified. She has a good degree, a DELTA (more advanced TEFL diploma) and years of teaching experience. She has really funky style - lots of tattoos and piercing, she wears denim shorts with checked shirts, has bright red hair....she's a great teacher, but a lot of students immediately ask to change out of her class because they don't think she's 'serious'. It's silly but it happens.

I'd always go for smart casual, at the very least.

I'd definitely go in to work for the first couple of days in trousers / slacks, proper shoes and a shirt / sweater, look clean and presentable, but don't over do it.

how were your interviewers dressed when they met you? They are in work whilst conducting the interview, so that should give you an idea.

My brother is a manager in an I.T. company and has been in the industry for 15 years. He borrowed a suit off me the other day to go to a wedding, sooooo, generally I don't think it's too formal.

Something like this little spiffy number to start I'd suggest ;)
