What would you guys recommend to bring life back to a black car?
I have a kesteral DA. I used some dodo juice need for speed and while it helped it was only a quick fix until I had more time to spend at the car.

The paint is slightly dull with swirl marks. I plan to clay the car and was wonderind what is the best/reasonably priced polish/polishes to use?

Car is a black magic skoda.

Being a VAG group car the paint will be extremely hard unfortunately.
I'd reccomend the Menzerna range for hard paint, it worked on my last car (a4).

I'm sure Metzger, Vectra and eringobragh will be along shorly with alot better information for you! :)

As gollywog said, VAG paint is very tough. As you are using a DA, it will take time to do correction on it.
It very much depends on how much correction you want to achieve...and that might be limited by the time you want to spend too! Perhaps you might like to do it in a similar way to eringobragh; doing a panel or two at a time and over a few weeks get great results. But that can be a bit painful as you will have to re-prep the panels each time you take the car for a drive. Prep'ing each panel as you do it would be the way.
Or are you just looking to get the deep shine and gloss back in the paint, and not too concerned about correction?

The best polishes I have used, would be Scholl and I have to source that through the UK. Scholl S3 is an brilliant compound and works really well on the harder paints of BMW and VAG. And S40 is a really nice refining polish...its pretty much those two on various pads that will give the results I need.

Chemical Guys V38 Opitical Finishing Polish is another that I really like, its quite oily, so can be worked for a long time to give great results.
I have V36 there, but rarely use it as I grab the Scholl S3 everytime. I havent tried V34 or V32, but I have some ordered and arriving during the week, so will be trying them out over the while.

Menzerna polishes, as said, work quite well with hard paint too - Ive kind of gone off them a bit as they are very dusty, but they are effective.

Which ever you decide to go with; remember, patience is key - dont rush into trying to get correction, sometimes it takes 3 or 4 sets to get the results you want. Work in small areas; 1.5ft x 1.5ft. And remember to give the car a good wash down to remove all the polishing oils before you decide to put protection on the car, otherwise it wont bond to its best potential!

Cheers. I use the car daily so I dont want the hassle of preping it each time. I would like some correction but not over fussed for now. Maybe later on in the summer when there would be more time and hopefully good weather.

I would also like to get the stuff I need from the one place of possible. I know I can get the menzerna stuff from clean car.

What you are best off doing is planning to do a one stage polish all over the car.

    Prep...
    Wash
    De-Tar
    Rinse
    Clay
    Wash / Rinse
    Dry

Give yourself 2 hours to prep, then tape up anywhere that you dont want polish to rub off from the pad onto...to prevent staining and burning trim, etc.

Then with a reasonably low cut polish and soft pad, do the whole car...this will give it great shine, depth and gloss.

Wash it down again to get rid of any oils. Dry it and then apply your protection of choice!

We're expecting an order from Chemical Guys middle of next week...pads and polishes.
But if you want to go with Menzerna, then CC is your point of call! ;)

I've been considering buying a DA for a while now. I would be using it on my own car a black 2003 BMW and a black 2006 Audi as well. The Audi has some fairly bad swirls and marks from ditches etc

My question is, would the DA not be good enough to improve the paint as the paint is hard on these cars, as said above, or would I need a rotary polishing machine?

I have no experience of either rotary or DA so would be reluctant to go at any car with a rotary

Both will give the same results....just with the DA it will take longer. You will require more passes with the DA as it generates less heat, but on the flip side, it is far safer to use, for someone who hasnt used a machine polisher before!
Some make out the rotary to be a paint destroying machine, in the wrong hands, yes! But if you take care with it, around the edges of panels and on crease lines, then you'll be fine. Though practice on a scrap panel or two, to get the basic technique would be advisable!
Secret with the rotary is start with the least cut and polish combo and work your way up, until you find a combo that gives you the results you want to achieve!
Any other questions, fire ahead! :)

Hmmm think I will probably end up going with the DA to be safe, just incase, don't mind spending that extra time!

Kestrel DA-6 will prob be what I'll go for, as regards pads, I would want 6.5" pads ya? Would I get away with just those or would I need the smaller ones aswell for the the likes of the front bumper around the grills? I want to keep it to as low cost as possible if I can, if I have to get them I will though.

Also need tar remover, bought autoglym and I may as well have been using water! Tardis or tar cleanse seem to be what people on here recommend?

    Thanks for the help!

Tar cleanse is way better IMO, but then it's more expensive.

You'll definitely need smaller that 6.5".....they're huge, and on most modern cars there aren't many flat areas for them to work on....roof, parts of the bonnet and boot lid. Apart them that, you'll need smaller pads to get in places you mentioned, but also to get into humps and hollows on doors etc. Key is.....pads are most effective when 100% of the flat surface if the pad is in contact with the paint. Impossible with large pads.....I use a 4" pad about 60% of the time. Then a 3" spot pad 20% of the time and 5"or bigger the rest.

I'll probably get a set of both large and small pads so by the looks of it.

It's mad how addictive car cleaning can become! Months ago I barely even knew about the 2BM and would have thought it madness to spend c. €200 on a machine for polishing but there ya go! My family definitely think i'm losing it:P
