Have a 05 peugot 407 1.6hdi, 195,000Km, in good general condition but is slipping out of 5th gear so peugot garage have advised a re-work of the 5th gear is needed to resolve the issue, costing around €550. I think it's time to trade in, anyone know how much roughly I could expect to get for this without repairing the gearbox or should I sell privately as is. Looking at a 08 diesel, something like an Octavia, Mazda 6, mondeo, do 120km commute a day so need a reliable car! Any opinions, thanks!

I can't see you getting any more than 3 - 3500 trade in at the very most. Even if you fixed the problem and sold it privately you might get a little more.

3 to 3500 with slipping out of gear? No chance I'm afraid.
    More like 1500!

Oh dear, the Peugeot guy led me to believe it wouldn't make much of difference for trade in whether I fixed the problem or not, don't know what to do now, I guess ask a few garages and see what they say, thanks for replies.

Theres no real market for faulty car. The only person likely to take it off you would be someone looking to make a few quid i.e. give you nothing for it fix it and sell it on.

Trade ins are usually a joke!
But if you get 3000 for an 8 yr old Peugeot that has maybe a serious problem, by all means go for it.
I would not like to be the guy that gets landed with it afterwards though.

Just on a side note OP, my brother has the exact same car!
His steering went a bit wonky the other day and I had a look at it for him.
There are 3 bolts(2 big, 1 small)holding in the ball joint on each wheel.
2 bolts on one side and 1 on the other we're after falling out.
After seeing what a crappy way of holding in ball joints, I just thought I would be better to let you know and maybe get someone to do a quick check.
5 minute job and better to be safe than sorry.

Alot of the time when the balljoints are replaced the drive shafts pop out of the box while the job is been done...when there pushed back in the can bring in grit onto the gearbox seals.... the seals leak gearbox oil and when the box has no oil it fails........5th gear seems to be the first one to fail.

Op...as already said you'll get very little for it as is (1500-2000max) either you could fit a s/h box or repair your own.
If you fit a s/h box the clutch & flywheel would also need to be checked when the gearbox out.....either way its going to cost alot...:(

at that milage and age the car is worth little, new mondeos are decent, repair work on that pug will be over a grand easily as mentioned.

with the bad clutch, if you got 2 grand for it i would take as is.

Hi there. €550 sounds excessive for fixing fifth gear as it is on the outside of the box and can be done with the box still in the car. I've done 4 or 5 at this stage. Try other garages and you should get better prices, doesn't have to be Peugeot. Try selling privately if you get the job done as you can expect more. As for buying a reliable car, fords were known for injector/ pump problems so have the car checked out. And if you are buying diesel most modern diesels have a particle filter which can be an expensive fix should they go wrong, and will need suitable oil when it comes to servicing which is slightly dearer than usual. If there is a warning light on in the dash get it checked by your mechanic. Mazda would be s good buy, but check the service history for regular oil changes. Hope that helped.

If you're trading it in as it is, maybe try a dealer in a built up city at rush hour (should rule out the 5th gear problem!)
The guy next door has an 06 diesel mazda that he throws money at constantly trying to sort out injectors/black smoke/engine warnings. I like opel Astras

Thanks for all the replies, lots to think about now. That's interesting about the ball joints as we had these replaced last summer so maybe that's what's going on, thing is they don't know what's wrong with it, just reckon a recondition will sort it out. We've had particle filter problems sorted with this car and cost a lot so will defo look out for out for that.
Citreonhero- a friend has said he could replace the gearbox for us when we thought that's what we had to do, since then the garage has said we could just change out the 5th gear, is this a similar job?he's not a mechanic(but has done it before)but if we get parts he will do it free so that's a good option for us if its doable?

100% Go with the friend if he knows what his doing.
No point forking out loads of money if you don't have to.
Especially on this car as resale value drops a lot every year.
Might as well get your money's worth out of the car now.
