Bikes + Hostels/B&B's

Going to be touring Solo along the West Coast of Ireland (South of Galway mostly) and have noticed a lot of B&Bs are 'pps' (Per person sharing) with their rates, which easily outprices my budget. This brings me to Hostels, which are in budget.

I was wondering if anyone has had any experiences with using B&Bs/Hostels while bike touring? Is there a place to lock your bike up? Safe to leave Panniers in a shared room or do they have lockers?

There are points where I may be spending two nights in one location and would like to be able to leave my panniers behind on a day trip. Just wondering how safe this is, and if anyone has ever run into a problem trying to find a place to stay while on a bicycle.

Ive stayed in kennmare and baltimore west cork , both had bike racks and lots of other cyclists. no drying room though. generally i think the hostel is the way to go when cycling.

Its certainly a good deal cheaper.

I think I am going to go with a hostel when possible, B&B when its not (or if I need a really good nights sleep).

Touring Solo seems to limit the options in regards to sleeping arrangements. A lot of B&Bs are ~33 - 40, PPS (Per Person Sharing) which means I have to cross them off my list of potential places to sleep since I can't afford that fare for a night.

Hostels main option seems to be dorm-beds - I think locations I am spending 2 nights at will be B&Bs just for security of my panniers when I go out for the day.

In B&Bs you'll probably have your own room, so no worries there. In any hostel I've stayed in they have lockers, either in the room in fancy cases, or somewhere else on the premises in most cases. You may need to carry your own padlock, though (but I'm sure you can also rent them).

I've usually asked for secure bike storage, and there's never been a problem with them putting it into a shed or storage room or something (I hate carrying locks with me, so I've always relied on this).

I've never had a problem with stuff being secure in hostels. Just don't leave really expensive things lying around in the common room or something ;)
