    Hi guys,

I hope it's appropriate to put this query in here with you knowledgable folk. If not mods please feel free to lock.

I have a Saab and I've a very strong suspicion that the alternator has packed it in - a common problem apparently. It's parked at home at the moment so ideally I'd like to drive it to a garage that's within one battery charge of distance. (Actually slightly less because I think I heard a distinctive whirr last night and have driven about 3 miles since.) I'm not 100% sure that my AA cover will cover towing it to the garage of my choosing.

So I'm looking for recommendations for a reputable independent garage in the Saggart area who I can trust to assess/confirm the problem and won't screw me on a rehab/replacement one.

Peamount motors in Newcastle (where the Ford centre used to be), there are couple of garages in Greenogue business park, or there is a garage in Rathcoole, where the sign is for fuel on the main street. Just before the place where taxis used to be. I think that there is chineese there now.

If you're sure it's the alternator, Kevin O'Sullivan auto electricians on the Blessington Road might do this. Never dealt with him myself but my mechanic sent my car to him for another electrical fault.

    Hi guys,

Thanks very much for the suggestions. I ended up going to Browne Motors on Robinhood Road and was happy with their work with one minor exception. I'd go there again. Pros and cons below:

    Pros:
    • Very helpful on the phone even at weekends and happy to work around my schedule.
    • Did the job very quickly.
    • Seemed to do a good job fitting a "rehabed" alternator. No problems since.
    • Also spotted a minor oil leak and fixed that for me free of charge - I thought this was very nice.
    • Good value for money. Didn't seem to be a "Dublin premium" on their services.

    Cons:
    • Just the one. My car has little plastic covers on my wheel nuts (these lads: http://www.partsforsaabs.com/popup_large_image.php?pID=2917 ) and they broke one of them when they were removing the wheel to get at the alternator. They just slipped it back on and didn't inform me about it. I found that disappointing but to be fair I almost broke one myself the first time I tried removing them.

Overall I'd recommend them and would use them again myself but I'll take the wheel nut covers off myself before I bring the car in.
