Somethings not right as he was missing greens from some pretty easy positions yesterday..

Short game kept him at level yesterday as he never really looked at threatening a strong score and hasn't all year..

Not blaming Nike but what an awful advertisement for the brand and Titleist are coming out the winner on the deal

    All joking aside .

At what stage , do we and he starting worrying about his form.

Starting to feel it may be a bad move, while the clubs will be built to whatever spec he wants how much is the ball, putter etc... having an impact?

Also all the questions hanging over his head can't help.

This will be 5 competitive rounds so far in 2013 with 1 being match play.

I still think it's too early for all this
He was useless for a period last year and that wasn't equipment...maybe Caroline ?
He seems to have more fluctuation than Tiger had. He can go from missing cuts to blowing away field in a major in a short period.

I think it's more him than the clubs at the moment with the exception of the putter. Watched some of it yesterday and he struggled to get to the hole with his putts. And when he did he seemed to be forcing it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 444 ✭✭Rippeditup

Ohhh not blaming the clubs as lets be honest at their level the club really shouldn't make a huge difference..

The pressure of the price tag on his head and all that goes with it can't be easy...

    Withdrawn - possible injury?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,510 ✭✭✭✭PARlance

Rory hasn't exactly been mister consistent throughout his short career.
    He's hot and cold.

I think the equipment change is being over hyped, and due that hype, we are having this discussion.

I personally think that other things like a lack of focus on the game at stages (caused by media commitments, the celebrity relationship he's in, being young...) can all be attributed to his dips in form.
He's a young lad, all this will affect him, I'm not saying he should or can stop himself being distracted, just that it's distracting him, and at times that will cause him to go in and out of form.

Possibly :) In fairness, he battled through in the Masters after imploding.

Well he was hardly going to pull out of the Masters now was he, on the back 9 on Sunday??

Good to see the sole Irishman in the field, Graeme McDowell, going well at -4.

Apparently "not in a good place mentally". Could mean any number of things.

Family issues, love life issues, or just frustrated with his game. Either way, fairly bad form to withdraw. Sponsors wont be happy. Did Tiger do this before and get castigated for it?

Just to e clear I'm not 'bashing' McIlroy, but sometimes hes too emotional/honest. Might have been better to finish the round and then deal with the issue privately.

he walked off the course....its literally unheard of as world number one (hi TW). No-one is bashing him, its just quite a sensational withdrawal.

Rory McIlroy was 7-over through eight holes. Walked off the course while playing No. 18. Was gone from the premises within minutes.

"severe wisdom tooth pain affecting concentration" is the excuse from the PGA Tour

On the radio (Today FM i think) they said it was severe pain due to wisdom teeth.

Yeah, I think we all know that that is a load of BS. He was simply having a mare of a round and walked off. I wouldn't actually call him a brat for doing it, I am sure a lot of us have done it or felt like doing it and yes, he has contractual obligations and is supposed to be professional but this little game we play is infuriating at times.

Toothaches can make it next to impossible to carry out basic tasks. Some of the ones left me unable to do anything but think about the pain and feel sorry for myself.

A lot of know-it-alls on this thread.

    2013:
    Rory McIlroy this year:
    HOLES
    80
    EAGLES
    0
    BIRDIES
    9
    PARS
    53
    BOGEYS
    13
    DOUBLE BOGEYS
    4
    WORSE
    1
    TO PAR
    +14

    Rory's statement:
I sincerely apologize to The Honda Classic and PGA Tour for my sudden withdrawal.
I have been suffering with a sore wisdom tooth, which is due to come out in the near future. It began bothering me again last night, so I relieved it with Advil.
It was very painful again this morning, and I was simply unable to concentrate. It was really bothering me and had begun to affect my playing partners.
I came here with every intention of defending my Honda Classic title. Even though my results haven’t revealed it, I really felt like I was rounding a corner.
This is one of my favorite tournaments of the year and I regret having to make the decision to withdraw, but it was one I had to make.

    Taken from here

Indeed, toothaches can be painful but you need to wake up if you think that is the sole reason why he withdrew. He was playing like sh1t and that is why he walked off.

You think if he was bent over with pain he would be ploughing the course up like below...... I don't think so.

If he was 2 or 3 under would he have walked off the course! I think not

Rory's original excuse was "His head wasn't in the right place." No mention of tooth pain. The fact that he walked off STRAIGHT AFTER hitting a ball into the water doesn't help his case. He was slamming clubs throughout too.

I love Rory and am a massive fan but I am 99% certain here that he was had no tooth pain, was sick of playing poor and didn't want to face the media slating his Nike move.

    Balls statement that.
Advil last night, no mention today ?

He has a tooth ache, cool, but he needs to watch his beloved Ulster a bit more. He should have taken something stronger and finish.

Hope he doesn't turn in to another David duval.
I'm sure Nike sent too happy I can't imagine many people buying the new bike driver on tge back of Rory's performances.
Added to the fact his Nike stablemate Paul casey is currently 16 over

Apologies to all at the Honda. A tough day made impossible by severe tooth pain. Was desperate to defend title but couldn't play on. Gutted

I feel very sorry for him. He was obviously having a very bad time out there and I'd say must have decided several holes before he got to the 18th (his 9th) that he was going to head for the hills.

But he'd also have known, as soon as he began to think about it or discuss it with his caddie, what would happen next - the speculation, the sponsor's disappointment, the media coverage etc. (i.e. a microcosm of what we've seen here in only a couple of short pages!!) - not forgetting the fact that he'd know that this won't be forgotten for a long time either and that people will continue to throw it at him, as they still do about his Masters performance...

I feel sorry for him. No matter what the reason, it can't be easy walking in off the course early, especially with the weight of expectation that is on his shoulders.

    He'll be back!

PS - "Brat"???! What the heck is that about??! It doesn't seem to me to be an appropriate description for someone, a world number one, who has seen very public disappointment in the past and who has got back up, dusted himself down and reached the very top of his chosen profession, while at the same time continuing to have a very positive attitude when dealing with media, fellow players and, of course, fans....

No, I don't think so. At least when that happens you can say you stuck it out. When you leave early you lose that excuse. 85s are not that uncommon on the tours...
