Pensioner with cash to invest

Any thoughts on best place for 85 a pensioner with a lump of cash (Circa 50k) to invest.
He has enough pension income for day to day purposes as well as some bank deposit for rainy day. His desire is to have something that is accessible but is also generating return to be passed on to children and grandchildren.
The money had been previously been in 5 year Post office savings bonds. They were rolled over when they came to term and that option is no longer available.

I'm thinking on the basis of the highest yielding bank deposit account.
