Bupa Classics Visitor Cover with Extras

    Hi Guys,

I know this health insurance thing has been done to death but i just want to get peoples' opinions on this.

I have the classiv visitors cover with extras. Extras has proved benefical, as i managed to get my contact lenses through it so i am happy with that aspect of it. However, I recently had some chest pains and had to go to the hospital. I went to a public hospital in Brisbane and was told i was covered by the reciprocal agreement and not charged to see anyone or have x-rays/e.c.g/bloods done. My insurance cover only covers me for public hospital stays etc so am i essentially paying for something i already have entitlement too?

I do get back 50% on doctor's visits but i dont go to the doctor all that often thankfully and the hefty premium is certainly equivalent to a couple of doctor's visits. We (a couple mid 20s) are paying $132 per fortnight for the cover.

It obviously covers for repatriation so is this really what i am paying for??

Has anyone else had a think about this or can set me on the straight path?

    Thanks!

    50%?

If you go to a doctor that bulk bills, you should be getting close to 100% back.

I'm on that policy and I do. Similarly, as you said, I was able to claim for things like a % of dentistry and physio (even got money back on a massage I got before).

Thankfully I haven't need to use the hospital part of it yet but from what I believe, reciprocal only covers emergency procedures whereas Classic covers elective.

Also, open to correction in this, with the reciprocal, if a private specialist is working in a public hospital (which is not uncommon) and is assigned to your case while your sick, they can bill you for their services which is not included in the reciprocal but is covered by your insurance (so long as you are in a Bupa approved public hospital).

Also Bupa covers ambulance bills if you ever need it and a percentage of your medication as well.

Ambulance cover is great to have. Could cost 800-100$ to get an ambulance!

Also we have dental as one of our extras and its great for check ups, cleaning etc, as dental visits are so expensive here.
