Hey guys.I'm currently seeking a book that explains in detail the phenomena of light.Something that obviously delves beyond the 7colours and into infrared, radiowaves, xrays etc.

Is there a comprehensive book on the subject that stands out among others.
    Cheers

There are literally tons of books on light. Could you be a bit more specific in what you are looking for? What region of the spectrum, eg IR, x-ray, UV etc. Or are you looking more along the lines of how light operates as a wave, or just optics?

Also what sort of level are you looking for?

Thanks for the reply and by your reply Ive realised how vague my question was, sorry.

Im looking for one that covers all lengths of the spectrum really.Im in no way a scholar with this stuff so im looking for a casual informative toilet read.It doesnt necessarily have to go into the astronomical side of things.

I realise that even this reply is a little vague but im really just a layman who wants a general insight into this stuff

    Thanks again

I'm not sure if there are many pop science books out there that focus (no pun intended) on light. There are certainly none that I can review/recommend.

I dont know whether to recommend a book on optics, electromagnetic waves, quantum mechanics or quantum field theory.

Maybe start off with a leaving cert book and read the sections on light and optics for a beginning.

Then chapters on Electromagnetic waves and optics in Young and Freedmans "University Physics"

Then maybe read "Optics" by Hecht which is university standard.

Then read up on quantum mechanics of photons.

Some of the topics in this website will probably do the trick for free:

The book by Hecht isn't a casual read (which seems to be what Darth is after).
