Grateful if anyone can offer any opinions or advice before I head out to view and test drive some of them.

Go for alate 08 or 09 one with the 2.2 diesel, don't bother with the 2 litre diesel, it has a design flaw that has a reasonable chance of going catastrophically wrong.

40% catastrophic engine failure rate on the ones we had on fleet, and the others weren't trouble free.

    Don't fancy those odds myself.......

Many thanks for the replies everybody.

I'm quite taken back by this as I had my heart set on getting a 6.

My friend has a petrol 1.8 and claims it is very heavy on juice so I am definitely not getting a petrol model.

Am I hearing from you guys that all Mazda 6 diesels are to be avoided - including the more modern 2.2 ???????

If so I don't know what I am going to do.

The 2.2 would be fine. There are a small number of reports of issues with the 2.2, but they're a lot rarer than the old one, and in the 2.2 you just need to check the dipstick every 2 or 3 weeks. If you see the oil level increasing, it means there's diesel being deposited in the Sump, which is the root cause of the issue. If not, then you're sound.
I'd have no problem buying a 2.2 in them.
Incidentally, I did have an old shape 6 with the 2 litre diesel, for 3 years and many miles, never packed it in. Mate has one with over 150k miles, also sound. So they're not all bad!
