Oil specifications

Basically I bought 4 litres of castrol magnetic 5w30 fully synthetic oil for Opel Diesel engines. I never used the oil and sold my car. Now I have a ford focus 1.6tdci which also takes 5w30 fully synthetic oil. But I know castrol do one for ford engines. My question is can I use the oil I bought for my Opel on the service in the focus? How exactly are the two oils different? Obviously for the next serviceservice I would by castrol for ford engines but I'm just woundering would it make a difference for this service. There 107k km on the focus if that makes a diiference. Thanks for the advice.

The specs of the Ford oil are in the attached pic. If the castrol stuff meets it then you should be fine - it should have a Ford logo on side of the container, if it doesn't then personally I wouldn't use it given the vagaries of the DV6 engine ;) Note that the correct Ford oil is a "low ash" one for use with a DPF. It's a respectable €30 for 5L from most main dealers - and probably cheaper than what Castrol charge for their stuff!!!

There is no dpf so the ash level shouldn't make too much of a difference. Thanks for the help that's great I appreciate it.

Yes, Shamwari's pic confirms that Ford's specification is A1/B1 which is generally what they specify. A1/B1 is a low shear-strength oil that is specified for fuel economy. Some people believe that they are sacrificing some protection for economy but it's unlikely that Ford would specify an oil that is actually bad for an engine. I don't know what the Opel specification is but it might be A3/B4. This would be a high shear-strength oil and is widely used. They are both 5w30 oils which (in laymans' terms) means that they are the same weight or thickness. I would have no hesitation in using the Opel oil. It probably has better protection at the price of some loss of economy but the difference could be something like 0.5MPG. Go for it!
