Car Advice

    Howdy all,

Just looking for a bit of advice in relation to changing cars. To be honest my idea of a car is something to get me from "A" to "B" (I'll probably get lynched in here for saying that!!).

I'm currently driving a '00 Yaris that I bought for €1,500 about 3 years ago. Best investment I ever made as it's cost me nothing aside from petrol over the years. However I think it's finally time to change it up.

Looking to spend somewhere in the region of €5k - €7k and move up to a minimum '07 or '08. Don't want a larger engine than 1.4l and not too concerned about whether it's saloon / hatchback etc. Only condition is it must have rear passenger doors.

    Any advice greatly appreciated.

It might be worth trying for a 08 to avail of cheaper tax and won't limit you to a 1.4

I was given that same advice, but what happens next year? Will he have to sell the car and get an 09 to keep ahead of the tax?

No all 08 cars (or newer) are assessed under a different Tax system than cars that are 07 or older. It won't change to 09 next year, its always 2008 or newer regardless of the current year.

Thanks folks. Was more looking for opinions on the type of car I should be looking for as regards reliability / fuel efficiency etc. Most of my travelling would be done around the city rather than long distance trips if that makes a difference.

    Thanks again for the advice.

Edit - With regard to the 1.4 engine I was thinking more of potential insurance costs than tax to be honest.

If the op goes for a cc based 1.4 car as opposed to a say 1.6-1.8L 08+ car, the savings on tax will be negligible...

A shade above your budget but worth investigating:

I'd recommend selling the Yaris privately, I reckon you will get most of your €1500 back if it is in good shape. Then get a straight sale discount off the newer car.

Or if that is too much of a stretch then the Kia Ceed, it's the i30's sister car. Both are very reliable:

Thanks for the advice folks. I'll check them out.

Any reliability differences between the Kia and the Hyundai?

Nope, they are pretty much the same car. The Kia might have some of the original 7 year/150k km warranty left on it whereas the Hyundai didn't get the 5 year unlimited mileage warranty until 2010 here unless it's a UK import.

What will you do with your '00 Yaris?
