    www.breakingnews.ie/ireland/rabbitte-586197.html
The Communications Minister Pat Rabbitte has said everyone will have to pay a new broadcasting charge to replace the TV licence, regardless of whether or not they own a television. [more]
    This is insane!!!

Thats like schools here in the states telling people they MUST PAY SCHOOL TAX even if they have no one in school!

nobody doesn't use RTE in some way, its a public broadcaster, just like you don't use all the roads all the time they are there for public good/use.

efficiency and efficacy of operation is another question

Agreed. Though we need to have a serious discussion on what counts for public service broadcasting (hint: I don't think 'reality tv' drivel qualifies...)

I dont use RTE in any way shape or form ..... dont have Saorview, dont check aertel, dont check the RTE website .... dont listen to RTE radio .

why should I pay this tax ? I have no problem paying a TV licence for having a TV (which I do ...every december) ... but I do have issues paying for something I feel that I shouldn't have to pay.

should the general public declare a political tax on all politicians and make them pay a fee for being a public representative ? 50% of their gross earnings sounds fair enough to me !!

I'd have no problem with it if all broadcasters got a share of the pie. As it is, this is only going to further prolong the wasteage at RTE.
