There's a few similar looking to leyland cypress that grow fairly fast (1.5-2 foot a year compared to 3 foot for leylandii). They'll all ultimately grow into a large tree if left. Slower growing will take longer to fill the gap, but then are easier to maintain at a certain height.

The main problem with leylandii is it being planted in the wrong location, and then not being maintain (at 3 foot a year growth, it doesn't take much to get out of control). I personally don't get the outright hatred of it, in any circumstance.
