Got this catalogue today and a big who-ha being made about the maternal and terminal sires available. There are 7 bulls listed as terminal sires and only one of them is 5 star terminal! The next best is only 3 star terminal and some are only 1 or 2 star terminal. But of the 18 maternal bulls 8 of them are 4 star or more for terminal

    The picks for me are:
    • GJB angus
    • FTH limousin (ronick hawk is gs)
    • GWO limousin (on maternal list but better terminal traits, poor milk)
    • FTY limousin 5 star for both maternal and terminal (but reliability is v low)
    • FGG charolais - only pick from terminal list (and I won't be ordering him!) In fact FYB on the maternal list looks like a better terminal option.
Overall a better catalogue than the Autumn 2012 one. For those into Belgian Blues VMP and those into Salers PZB are worth a look.

I have some VMP straws in the tank but havent used any yet . Well used him on a neighbours cow but his rel% is so low i would be a bit wary myself .
He was also on the Autumn catalogue .

Any time i look at PG catlalogue that limo Castleview Gringo catches my eye . But as you pointed out , he is being pushed for a maternal sire but his terminal expectancy is much greater than the maternal ..
    Tis a bit odd

Ya Gringo has plenty of shape for the terminal side of things,i wouldnt be usein a Vantastic son for replacements.

Why won't you be ordering some FGG straws?

Ya, I got the Gene Ireland booklet yesterday. What is involved in joining. I must read up on it.
I really liked the look of the Lim bull, Lennon Frosty - FTY . He's by Wilodge Cerberus and the Simm bull Cloondroon Calling - QCD by CQA.
I think Cerberus is a super bull. I was at a few Lim Society Sales this year and I've seen a few of his heifers. They stand out a mile. Big hips and feminine.

Still in expansion mode. I also have a few terminal sire straws from the Autumn catalogue that I'll use this spring.

Yeah I was initially leaning towards FTY and on paper there is very little between FTH and FTY. In the end I went with FTH based on slightly better docility, milk and daughter calving interval. If I'd read your post before ordering I may well have gone for FTY instead!

I ordered some of the Angus GJB as well. He's excellent on milk, carcase weight and calving interval. As an Angus he looks good.

Look at this video from 3:40 on, to see two Cerberus (WGE) heifers selling in a row.

Cracking heifers and they did nicely alright. Did you order any straws? One advantage to the Gene Ireland programme is they come out to weight calves from selected bulls. While they're on the farm it's not much extra to get them to weight everything else.

    No, not yet anyway.
