    Hi all,

My mother wishes to get my father a weekend / night away with the boys (me and my brother) golfing. He's based in Waterford and myself and the brother Dublin, so someplace that wouldn't require too much driving would be nice. I'm thinking some place in Wicklow? It doesn't need to be a top course and I don't see reason to spend a lot of money on one (it would be wasted on us).

Tulfarris and Woodenbridge look good. Mount Woosley would probably be another option. What would you all reckon?

Played Tulfarris a month ago and it was in great shape compared to the other courses around all being closed. The course though of championship standard is easy walking and scenic and the conditioning and variety was superb. The hotel was super luxurious and friendly and the food was top class gourmet cooking. Would go back in an instant. Green fees for residents were also excellent. (An unbelievable 20 Euro)

Plenty of options for you: Mount Wolseley was the one I thought of first, but there's Bunclody (hotel opposite front gates and a lively small town), Macreddin (hotel on site), Tulfarris and Rathsallagh. The latter 2 would be further away from Waterford, so I'd go after the first three.

If you want some photos of the different courses: Flickr

There's also the Heritage at Killenard

I played Woodenbridge yesterday with three mates. I hadn't played it in years and had forgotten just how spectacular it is. It's in great nick and the greens in particular were outstanding. There was no food in the clubhouse so we nipped over to the Woodenbridge Hotel for food. No complaints there either - good food and friendly service.
They were advertising a golf special in the lobby - I can't remember the details but it might be what you're looking for.

Mount Wolsely? Just over an hour for both travelling parties, great course, lovely hotel with great food and a bar that (in my experience) has no closing time.

Guys, thanks for all the advice. We booked Woodenbridge because they had a great offer (dinner, golf, B&B for €100). We could take in another course if we want to anyway.

Sounds like a great deal. Rathsallagh or Arklow could be the other course.
    Enjoy !

European Club only down the road from woodenbridge, have lots of open comps if you have a GUI handicap

You won't be disappointed, society weekend away there last year. Played woodenbridge and arklow. Arklow is nice but woodenbridge is exceptional, manicured to perfection. Played some courses with big reputations in the past but woodenbridge was up there with any of them

Woodenbridge has some of the best greens in the country. They are unbelievably good, not to mention the scenic surrounds. It's a must play, very good value too.
