Cycle to the Airport for a flight

Just wondering if there is secure facilities for locking a bike in the airport?

I'm going on a weekend trip away, and was considering cycling to the airport and locking my bike there for the two nights.. It's not that long a commute but a taxi costs ~€30 each way and parking is over €20. It would take two buses but it would be quicker to cycle..

I had a quick search and can't see anything recent about it, and the daa website is quiet on the issue!

    Any advice boardsies? :)

I have done this, but it was a number of years ago. There were bike racks in the short term multi storey car park beside terminal one.

I used to do this all the time. There is space to lock a bike in the multistory carpark right beside arrivals at terminal 1. Its a great way to get to the airport if you don't have too much stuff and even nicer when you arrive back in Dublin because there is no waiting on taxis or buses. I used to always follow the old road which is quite and pleasant cycling.

    Few bits of advice
    1) Don't bring tools/pumps/tubes in your bag, security will nick them.
    2) There is free deodorant in duty free (Samples).
    3) If you ware a helmet lock it to the bike, Ryanair will claim its an extra piece of luggage.
    4) Its all up hill to the airport from town... however that means you can be in the city center 30 min after leaving the door of the plane on your way home.

    Enjoy

There are cycle racks near the Airport Garda station at Terminal 1 - best off locking up there

    Perfect!

I saw that other thread, but 2009 is a while ago - I didn't trust the info! :)

I'll go with two locks just to be sure :pac:

    For info the Garda station at the airport is;

From outside T1 departures, head down the hill, as you pass the walkway for pier D, at the bottom of the hill before the road bends around, you will see a road to the buildings on your left (next to the building with the golf ball on the roof), the airport garda station is there, in the old north terminal. As said above, some bike racks around there, also not many heads, so should be safe.

Dublin Airport Garda station is no longer open 24 hours so it would be fairly quite there at night.

I'd prefer to leave my bike in car park A near the pedestrian mall area. It's well lit and there's always plenty of activity in that area and Dublin Airport Police do regular patrols there. There's also CCTV but I'd be a bit cynical about it's operation.

Would you leave a half decent bike (in the car park)?

I wouldn't be taking my good bike over (I still don't want it stolen though!) so I don't think anyone would steal the bike for monetary value...

Which place would be better in terms of bike safety? :(

I would but I leave my bike overnight in the city centre. I have good locks though. Maybe I'm too trusting but I've never had a bike robbed.

Two of my friends have had bikes robbed in the last while. I had warned them about their sh!tty locks but to no avail.

Parking a bike for free in Dublin Airport is really easy. Admin building car park, if questioned mention that you are a friend of Clare or Mick.

If you book online and are willing to go to Harristown (Blue Car Park) you can get a rate of €4.95 per day.

Clare and Mick don't work in car parks anymore

Mick most likely owns the Car Park but has not declared it, and Clare never gave back her swipe card before transfering to Kildare St. So even though they may not work there they are stakeholders. Anyhow it all about a nod and wink.

Ah there's no danger in that..

I want to arrive back to the uncertainty of my bike being there or not :P

Also that translates to 15 quid for the weekend :-\

Well, no, going on my own experience: I locked my car and left it, and rushed in to see someone off, then couldn't remember which the hell carpark I'd left it in. After wandering around like a lost soul for 20 minutes or so I pressed the button on the parking machine and said I couldn't find it, and they told me exactly where it was - "We logged you in using your licence plate," they said. Couple of years back, but I'd assume it hasn't changed much.

I presume they just told you which car park you were in - easily done with a reg check. I was referring to actual security monitoring of the CCTV images. A little example - DAA make a big thing about the security aspect of number plate recognition cameras at the entrances/exits saying it prevents thefts as most cars stolen from the car parks are done by entering with a previously stolen banger and exiting with a better car on the same ticket. They say this can't be done now but for work reasons I sometimes enter in one vehicle, pick up another and exit on the same ticket. No one ever stops me!

Nope, they told me *exactly* what bay my car was in, and had obviously been watching me wandering around like a lost soul. Another time I'd managed to lose my ticket and they told me to come to the office; they had the car timed in and out.
