Hopefully it's better than last year when I arrived on the Friday at 6.30, queued for an hour to get served, before finally giving up and heading to L. Mulligans for the night.

Carlow Brewing, basically. Same people as last year and the September festival in the RDS.

Plastic glasses. Hour long wait. Is this even worth going to?

The plastic drinking receptacles sucks but is an evil necessity apparently.

I seemed to have been unlucky with my hour long wait because that was apparently unique for the solitary hour I was there and didn't happen at any other time over the weekend.
Still, not much consolation for me. :(

Anyone got any idea what the prices were liek last year? Dont fancy queueing for an hour and paying 6 bills to drink out of a plastic glass...especially when I can go round the corner to the Brew Dock

The difference between the festivles and just going to Brew Dock/Black Sheep/ ATG/Mulligans/etc is there will be a good amount of beers at the festivle you won't be able to get anywhere else, like cask only small batches made just for the festivle like Dungarvan's Rye-PA or some of O'Hara's specials, so for those reasons alone it's worth the visit.
As for queueing for an hour, stuff like that only happens on the thursday and friday from about 5.30 - 7 as the lads from the ISFC and other local office blocks empty into the place for a post work drink, it's usually grand the rest of the time.

Thanks for that Seaneh.....had forgotten about the special brews....particularly liked O Haras Winter Star....hope they have some of that. Will it be a 5er a pint like the other festival last September?

Or there'll be a good amount of beers up on the board which won't actually be available. :pac:

Last years event was a farce, probably made a few bob though

That's the model in most nightclubs and people generally don't have a problem with it.
I'd have no problem paying a few quid into a venue that has a large selection of high quality Irish beers and has a good atmosphere with no toe rags in sight to ruin it.

If its anything like last year i wont be going.. Granted we went on the Sunday and they were a little short of stock!! But couldn't get any info on any of the selection.. Bar staff seemed clueless or not interested!
Place was pretty messy and the plastic cups sucked!

Whens the next RDS one!! That was a brilliant!

Might as well mention it, the organisers have hired me to work the entire festival and keep the bar running smoothly, staff will be trained about the beers. :)

Plastic cups unfortunately are beyond our control.

Next RDS one is in September.

I'll get a list up as soon as I know it. For now, the most interesting beer I know that is going to be there is Eight Degrees whiskey aged chocolate stout.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,694 ✭✭✭✭drunkmonkey

Can you just pay once or have you to pay every time you go?

Was thinking of heading in for a few the first night but won't make it until after 7 and probably get pulled in by the lads Saturday and possibly Sunday if the crack is good?
    Is it indoors?

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 5,840 Mod ✭✭✭✭irish_goat

How come Oktoberfest in the same location licensed by the same council can serve Glass Steins? What’s the difference with this event?

According to the festival web site the craft beer event has Free Entry before 7pm on March 13th, 14th and 15th
€5 after 7pm each day and all day March 16th, 17th and 18th

Went down with the OH this evening. I had a half pint of Kindrid Spirit. It was ok but I thought it lacked any major distinguishing characteristics. Ultimately it reminded me of Guinness and at €7 a pint it doesn't seem worth it. She had a Sabotage IPA, which was nice and malty, although I thought it lacked body and hoppy goodness. I then had a Bo Briddle IPA, which I hadn't tried before. Much better - very bitter, moderately hoppy but with a slightly sulphurous aftertaste.

I tried to get a Leann Follain on cask but they didn't have a part required for this. Badly managed but it is the first day. Nothing else on cask. The bar staff also didn't seem to be as informed as one might hope.

Overall, I enjoyed the hour and a half I spent there. I'll be back on Friday afternoon and will expect better.

I noticed something quite interesting on the website under the beer section....

    O'Haras Double IPA

    Anyone know anything about this.
Has an Irish micro finally decided to answer our call for a big hoppy beer. :D

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 5,840 Mod ✭✭✭✭irish_goat

Cask was tapped up at about 7.30pm and will be on permanently now.

And yes, there are a few kegs of O'Hara's Double IPA there. I've not tried it yet since it's a brand new beer but I'm gonna whack it on tomorrow.

Heading down to this Friday. Anyone got any idea of how much a beer costs? Or are they all different prices?

€5 for a "normal" strenth beer €7 for stong beer

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,584 ✭✭✭✭Creamy Goodness

can you get 1/3rd and 1/2 pints, only a few i'd actually want to get a full pint of the rest i'd be tasting only.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,635 CMod ✭✭✭✭Ravelleman

Half pints are €3 (€4 for high ABV beers). A bit unsound not charging half-price but there you go.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 752 ✭✭✭illdoit2morrow

    And its definitely plastic glasses?

Was hoping to come away with a heap of the proper pint glasses, like they had at the RDS event.

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 11,975 Mod ✭✭✭✭BeerNut

Plastic all the way :( The proper glass ones will be back for the RDS in September, I'd say.
