    Good afternoon,

I've a few lads from various paving companies coming out over the next few days to give me quotes on getting the driveway paved, cobblelocked possibly.

I just want to know what sort of questions should i be asking?
Are there hidden costs i need to be aware of?

    Thanks in advance.

Do they have references and contacts of recently completed work that you can go and see in the flesh??

Do they have insurance and public liability insurance??

What sort of base will they be installing???(7-8 inches 804 hardcore compacted down with whacker plate)

What depth of sharp sand (40-50mm base).

Will they be installing a weed membrane aswell??...(mypex weed barrier)

Are they brushing in silica sand between the block pavers??

Will they be sealing the block pavers and what garantee are they providing for the finished job???

Will they remove all concrete, rubble and waste and clean up as the job is completed??

Get a full written quote that says exactly what they will be doing for the cost involved.

Top stuff Paddy, also let them know, there will be no payment till the job is complete, if you are able to keep an eye on them or someone else is to make sure they do what they say, it is very easy to skip some of the stages that Paddy mentioned,

GL with it S, I hope it turns out fine, you posh person.

    http://www.pavingexpert.com/blocks.htm

This site is the most incredible resource for block paving & other landscaping & drainage info. The author Tony McCormack is the top man in the northern hemisphere according to a guy from Tobermore that I spoke to.

Maybe a bit more info than you need but it's all there. There is a forum there too.

I found Tobermore to be more expensive for the exact same product (60mm deep block paver).

I went to Kilsaran who were better and cheaper.

Then I went and ordered an entire job lot of Kilsaran pavers, border pavers, hardcore and sand from a well known builders providers.

They gave me the block pavers for alot cheaper than Kilsaran direct in Clonee.

So it pays to shop around.:D

Cheers lads, only seeing the replies now. Faai play to you :)

Had 2 guys out yesterday, they went through everything with me and mentioned a lot of things Paddy had suggested.

Will get another few quotes over the coming week or two.

The quotes i got yesterday were both a lot more expensive than i'd anticipated. If all the quotes turn out to be in and around the same price, then we wont bother with it as we still have a lot to do inside the house.

    Thanks :)

PS - Im not a posh person :p

    This is Mypex...it costs around 60 euro for a 1.5 x 50 meter roll.

2 meter x 50 meter roll is around 80 euro

If they try to charge you more than this for supplying it,then they are messing you around.

Get the materials yourself from a builders providers and pay a company/trades person for direct labour to install said products and materials.

Some builders providers provide a free delievery once you spend more than 50 euro with them.;)

Others will charge you around 20-30 euro delievery fee.

Thats what I did and it worked out grand..saved a good bit of money. Then got the missus to design and build the front and back gardens.:)
